How DID they make him look younger as Richard? I joked to my husband that I wondered if actors undergo Botox injections just for a temporary role LOL! It is true that even now all he would need is something around the eyes and for the lines in his forehead, and that is why most people who get Botox routinely would do it. I know that is not what they did, but I couldn't figure out what they did do. It was amazing!
What still bothers me to this day is the jump of two years in what is supposed to be about a minute between The Great Game and A Scandal in Belgravia on Sherlock. BC obviously did more ageing in those two years than he has since (well, almost!). If they could even have had the fringe of his hair the same that might have helped. And in closeup for Game he appeared to be wearing mascara and eyebrow makeup but not at the beginning of Scandal. I couldn't believe they would make that mistake. They used less of such makeup in later episodes to make him look unhealthy at times, but in that scene they shouldn't have.
i also thought he was convincing as Turing all the way through and that they did a great job with makeup and hair (and I think teeth?) in that case. If he doesn't have to be younger than about 25 for Melrose (I have not read the books) it should be fine. And I will have to get Showtime in the next year LOL!

He was extremely thin when he did Sherlock season 1 probably because the role asked for it but also I think he was preparing to play a character dying of cancer (Third Star). He actually got sick during The Grea Game shooting. It was pneumonia, I think but I guess his weigh didn't help. So yes, he was pale thanks to makeup but probably it "helped" that he was getting sick in real life. Then with the second season he was preparing for Parade's End in which he supposedly played a fat guy. Sue Vertue said he was on set eating everything trying to get fat. Maybe these are the reason he chnaged so much in those few years than he has changed since then. EDITED: I found this 2010 article about him playing Sherlock with pneumonia: www.digitalspy.com/tv/sherlock/news/a249104/cumberbatch-spaced-out-on-sherlock/

Did you watch "La prima Angélica", sgev1977? On that film, from Saura, Jose Luis López Vázquez played the character Luis who is a grown man and also himself as a child as he remembers his childhood. The discussion on BC playing or not young and old Patrick reminded me of that film.

I haven't! I love Cría Cuervos so maybe I should.
I don't think it's that extreme (or abstract), tho. It would be different if he played the twenty something guy during the entire series.
I really think he can pull it off now. He still looks young enough and did something similar recently. We will see...

Ah! I was not suggesting that he should do the same thing. I just remembered that film and that the same actor did both roles.
It is a good film.

Thank you sgev for the insight into what was actually going on with BC's health and other projects around the time of the first season of Sherlock. I had heard he had pneumonia at some point, but didn't know when. And to only miss one day of work? I knew he was dedicated! I didn't know just when Third Star was filmed either. I have had the DVD for some time and bought a region-less player, but still don't have the thing hooked up so I can watch it!
Coincidentally to this discussion I just saw a side by side comparison of a photo from the first episode and one from last season. He looked so very young at the beginning, but he still doesn't look his real age now, I don't think, even in comparison.

Yes, I know! Although it could be cool! 😉 Yes. I thought that till I imagined BC, so tall, playing the five year old Patrick being raped.

Another thing that's just occurred to me, though, is that it isn't entirely congruent that they're only now "looking" for an auteur director re what is apparently supposed to be a fixed shooting schedule already. BC might probably himself be the most problematic element re the scheduling, but still it doesn't make best sense to have a shooting date before they have their director attached. My theory is that they have already someone in mind. Probably in very advanced talks. The American producer is Rachael Horovitz. She is very respected and extremely well connected: jewishjournal.com/culture/arts/101214/I'm sure she could get an interesting "auteur director". He or she doesn't need to initiate the project but they need him/her soon for the pre-production, of course.
