I don’t really know where to put this, but here’s a photo of the real Bronco Henry!

He was real and an important celebrity in the area. As Thomas Savage’s step-uncle was real. Savage was convinced he was a closeted gay but true or not, it seems he never met the real Bronco Henry. They both existed at the same place and time but it seems that no, they weren’t gay lovers! I don’t know if the guy was still a beloved celebrity at the end of the 1960s but it’s not difficult to imagine why he didn’t received the love, he certainly deserved, by Montana audiences at the time! He portrayed a local macho hero into a gay man who seduced his own teenager uncle who was a late member of a respected rich family in the area!

Do you think BC saw that photo? His face isn’t clear but BC talked a lot about trying to imagine him during the filming. He said he could imagine feelings, sounds and smells but not his face and that Campion told him it was alright because that’s how memories work.

I think that Jane Campion was trying to get him to imagine a real person because Phil speaks often about Bronco Henry in the movie. And when he speaks about him, or sits on his saddle, or just touches the saddle, he does it with love. So imagining a real person was probably supposed to convey that on screen. As I watched the movie the first time, it struck me odd that the workers on the ranch - the other cowboys - would ask Phil about BH a lot. Then I realized that they did that to get grumpy Phil into a good mood. Peter caught on to this, too, and did it himself by the end of the movie.

In the book, his reason to not drink and hating alcoholic beverages is that he just knows he would reveal too much if he does it. Obviously, it’s suggested the “too much” is the true nature of his relationship with Bronco Henry. He barely can control his feelings toward him and he know it.

He does drink in the movie, though, but never getting drunk and acting wild like the other cowboys. As they all partied, he never participated - he stood back and just watched. JC probably didn’t want him not drinking at all in the movie because that was a quality that had been given Rose. She’s totally against alcohol - until Phil changed all that.

When the trailer first came out, someone on twitter made a nasty remark about a person on a ranch wearing tennis shoes - as if it was a mistake that the filmmakers didn’t catch, proving that it was a bad movie. So I’m happy that JC has spoken about it!
