Last week it was announced this project and it was an interesting news because Netflix supposedly wouldn’t do expensive films anymore and the fact that it was a romantic comedy by Nancy Meyer made it even more bonkers! Romantic comedies are supposedly a cheap genre! What was she planned to do?! Or it would go to the cast? With maybe the exception of Johansson, they aren’t exactly major stars! Maybe Wilson? And I know there is a lot of revisionism around the genre and around some female directors but, sorry, she isn’t Scorsese or Jane Campion (and Campion did her most expensive film with Netflix but it still was very cheap!)

I read some comments and, of course, Twitter is angry that they didn’t gave her the money! I saw a few people bullying the lone person saying that a romantic comedy shouldn’t be so expensive but a romantic comedy SHOULDN’T be so expensive!
Again, it seems the cast (and the director) wanted the money for them and they are indeed a very exciting group of people but they aren’t romantic comedy stars! They are more arty than anything! Of course, Johansson and Wilson have some experience in the genre and Cruz did Vicky Barcelona (alongside Johansson) but Fassbender is so dark and intense! Maybe he would had been the big surprise! Anyway, I don’t think they are big enough names to receive $80 millions! They aren’t Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the 1990s!
I wonder how much Netflix spend on the Ashton Krusher and Reese Witherspoon’s romantic comedy vehicle! I doubt it was THAT expensive!

Well, I would indeed love to see this Nancy Meyers movie happening. The cast sounds very exciting! If you dig around online a bit, you‘ll find out that Fassbender is like the opposite of his dark characters. He‘s very funny and silly and goofy in real life. He can exude a certain appeal that‘s hard to find. I‘m looking forward to him making a comeback soon!

I was talking about his screen persona. For example, Owen Wilson seem very laidback and light but he suffered from depression and infamously attempted suicide years ago. A lot of comedians are actually very dark.
It’s not surprising that intense actors like Fassbender (or BC) are actually sweet and funny in real life, I can’t see him in a romantic comedy but he is very talented so I wouldn’t be surprise if he would had been great in the role.
But again, it’s too much money for that genre (no special effect; no period clothes or settings; no need for a massive number of extras, etc.) and even when the actors are indeed great, I don’t think they all are proved in the genre to attract a huge amount of audiences and justify that money!

This person is claiming George Clooney and Julia Roberts New Romantic comedy had a budget of $60M! And Wikipedia agreed! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ticket_to_Paradise_(2022_film)They are proved major stars! How it’s possible that Meyer wanted the double for her movie! I can imagine the articles “analyzing” Netflix decision if they would had accepted! Again, I am not a fan of the genre but I know Meyer is a beloved director. She still isn’t Scorsese and there are people who think that Netflix sabotaged themselves when they did their Scorsese deal (and the movie is allegedly a major hit for the streaming service!).

Someone mentioned that Michael Bay was allowed to made 6 Transformers movies and Meyer can’t do a New Romantic comedy so I checked the budget of his last Transformer movie and yep, it’s less that what she was asking for! Lol en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblebee_(film)TBF there will be a 7th and it has a $200M budget but they are action flicks with a lot of complex and dangerous action scenes and multiple special effects. Of course, they are expensive! It’s insane Meyer’s budget was competing with something like Transformers!

Yep, some people think there is some kind of discrimination here but the difference with the bad action movies made by Netflix and this potential “classic” (according to her fans!) is that the money isn’t going to the movie itself but to the director and not exactly huge stars’ pockets! Nothing bad with being greedy but it seems she just pushed too much!
Scorsese asked for more than hers but his reason was a bonkers auteur idea: he wanted to re-age his very old cast with novel special effects. The film was a classic and a huge hit for Netflix and it still was questioned for being too expensive and probably affected Netflix in the long term.

Netflix allegedly would stop doing too expensive movies and go for genre flicks with mid budgets like romantic comedies and there's a good argument about how those little movies are much more profitable that bad huge action films (they are cheap to make!) but the moment you pay one of those like a Transformers movie, the argument lost any sense!

Other than Michael Fassbender, I do associate those other actors as comic - even Penelope Cruz (Zoolander). Unless they have an amazing, well-written original story to bring us, I have no interest in yet another romcom. Historically, the romcoms that have been popular were not necessarily big-budget or critically acclaimed.

Imo, there hasn’t been a decent romcom in 20 years, since Notting Hill. The writing on them is trite and cliched now. No wit, no sparkle, no snap. And as much as I’d like to see my romcom with Ben as a plein air painter off a debilitating divorce run off to the Lake District only to fall in love with Emma Thompson and not her age appropriate daughter Keira Knightly like everyone in town is expecting, I fear that the writing would make it terrible. So it’ll have to stay in my head, I guess. 😭
