Whatever happened to the Oscars being about the best acting performance?

TBF it was never about quality and always about politics. It’s just that an award that no one actually cares anymore it’s even a good measure about representation or about Hollywood racial politics. The first year of Oscar so White, the strongest contender by black artists was Selma which was completely abandoned by its studio during the Oscar campaign. Everyone knew it but when it wasn’t nominated the blame was only about the awards themselves. I think it was the same year of the masterpiece that it’s Beast of No Nation but that was sidelined not because the skin color of their protagonists but because it was Netflix first try to get awards. The next year there weren’t clear candidates. It was on Hollywood studios. They should be the ones that need to be pressured to do more and better films about minorities. but, for whatever reason, the conversation was only about the Academy (which was lead by a black woman who had to do those speeches apologizing and claiming they’re weren’t racists!). Why to care so much about a silly award? Now studios doesn’t do devious campaigns, only the evil white friends of indie actresses! Twitter activists have always big friendly with big companies and their activism is always about destroying individuals so there is nothing surprising there, I guess!
Anyway, I think the Academy’s “solution” was something positive because they indeed diversified their voters body but I doubt they would ever satisfy Twitter. They could include all the naysayers as the jury and there still will be people moaning!
And this is considered kinda offensive or, worst, “conservative” but if we go by actual statistics, 2 black actors in a line-up of 20 is exactly the right measure of representation based in the American population. According to Wikipedia, they are only 12.1% ( 2.42 of 20). Only one Latina is the real scandal! There should be at least 3 (18.7% of the population). British white actors are probably over represented as are Asians this year! But, again, it shouldn’t be so strict! It should be organic and they should represent what the American movie scene is doing so the ones leading the charge should be the studios but no one’s dares to bothers them maybe because they are very powerful! The awards are just the last phase of the system.

Thinking about it, the worst representation case is the directing category. Based on population, half if not more than the half of the nominees should be women. The issue is that if you see the Best Picture nominees, only one woman had a chance. Sure it’s a scandal she isn’t there but where are the others? There aren’t enough films directed by women so again the real villains here are the studios but no one is questioning them.

I’m totally in favour of diversity in the Oscars but it can’t just be a box ticking exercise. Like you pointed out Sgev, they’re tainted already due to the aggressive marketing and other industry politics. But giving awards to people just because they are from a particular ethnicity or other minority and not because theirs was genuinely the best performance will render the process utterly meaningless.

I just saw this example about how you can't never please everyone with your purest than everyone activism. Remember the Bro guy who claimed he did the first ever real and genuine gay movie that didn't had any dirty straight actor playing gays and then was unhappy that gay people didn't went to watched it? Well, it seems his movie wasn't gay enough!
I bet that most gay people just want to watch the next mediocre Spider-Man movie like everyone else!

It should get much more complicated for the 96th Oscars in 2024, when new rules for eligibility take effect!

Hollywood isn’t interested in art, it’s interested in money. Studios aren’t going to be able to meet their budgets by making movies that only appeal to 20% of the population along with a few white folks who ally with underrepresented demographics. I think (cynically), the only reason they’re bending to pressure is because they must or risk fomenting more outrage which will ultimately hurt their bottom line. 🤷🏻♀️
Unpopular opinion, but there ya go. 😬

This, courtesy of The Mary Sue. AR’s nomination is “misogyny towards black women.” Really? 🧐

The best thing about the Oscar is when they champion projects under the radar. The Woman King is the total opposite of that!

"The biggest minority in the USA are Latinos not Black people so it’s always perplexing that when they talk about representation they totally ignore that Latinos are almost completely erasure."
This is probably because they may be the biggest minority group, but not the loudest.
