Has anyone else watched these series?
Kleo - I just finished this. It was recommended by Stephen King, so I decided to watch it. It’s German but dubbed into English, I liked it a lot. It’s a bit like Killing Eve and deals with spy stuff, so there’s plenty of violence, and the political stuff is beyond me, but there’s also lots of humour, so I still enjoyed it.
1899 - This was also dubbed, but I don’t know from what language. I read some reviews afterwards saying that they liked that the characters from different countries spoke in their own language, so they were clearly not American like the dubbing would have you believe! It takes place on a ship. It’s a combination of sci-fi, time-travel and mystery, but I’m proud to say that I figured it out (sort of) by the third episode.
Three Days of Christmas - Also dubbed into English, but from Spanish. It follows three Christmas Days in the lives of a family of sisters. The first episode is in the 1950s, the second is twenty years later, and finally the third is 40 years after that. It was very good!

Dark was in German but 1899 is spoken in many languages including German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish. I watched the original version with subtitles. If you liked it and you haven't watched Dark, I recommend it. It's strange such as 1899 but in a different way.

I just read this thread and I’m shocked! I mean I knew the theory that Cleopatra was black was based on a very random crazy theory that social media embraced but I didn’t knew this, I googled it to confirm it and it seems it’s true, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsinoe_IVThe “proof” that Cleopatra was black is based on one of the worst racist pseudo scientific “method” ever invented by men! I’m very pro blind casting. I don’t like when it’s used for political reasons, tho. and I think there is a huge issue when the producers and, at least, some audience sincerely believe it’s a fact. In this case, it’s problematic because it not just seems that’s the case (the director said she confronted a lot of “racist” Egyptians that told her that Cleopatra wasn’t black while shooting the series) but also it’s called a DOCUseries. I also find fascinating how social media can embrace some ridiculous idea to the point they can “cancel” a film (remember how Gal Gadot was strongly criticized for accepting to play the queen) but then violently crash with reality when they go massive with a “correct” production. And just recently the great Sophia Okonedo played the role in the Shakespeare version without any fuss but again, that was fiction. The problem is when even the producers believe the social media lies.

This reminds me of the “thing” that goes around every once in a while -that Beethoven was black. It’s not true, but because he was described once as “swarthy” some folks think that means he was black. Once something catches hold and it suits a particular narrative it’s hard to disprove it!

A good example about what you said before: There's no room to talk about "the issues" because activists are shouting the loudest (even if what they're shouting is incorrect/incomplete/misleading info). I can't imagine the Egyptians trying to correct this guy, and him saying, "Nope, not interested in your point of view. I saw it on Twitter." Also, this is a hot take and I'm only commenting on what you guys are saying. I had no idea this entire issue was brewing out there.

I just saw a Tweet by the actress defending the production and there were some genuinely very racist horrible comments attacking her alongside some sincere tweets explaining why the so called documentary is historically wrong. It’s just sad that extremist in both sides make any discussion about difficult themes impossible. The ironic part is that both sides tend to have the same sources: centuries old racist ideas about pure identities. In this case, phrenology!!!

After watching tons of Netflix shows/movies recently, and being very disappointed (Billy Crystal’s Here Today was awful!), I hit something pretty good today!
It’s a limited series called The Tailor. I’ve only seen the first two episodes so far, and it seems to be returning for a second season. I was tempted to turn it off before the first episode even ended, but I stuck with it, and it greatly improved. It’s Turkish, so I’m watching it dubbed into English. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything set in modern-day Turkey, so that in itself is fascinating.
It’s about a well-known tailor/fashion designer, who has a good friend who’s a jerk (the reason I didn’t want to continue watching it). The awful friend is engaged, so the tailor is designing to bride’s wedding dress.
In the meantime, the tailor has family secrets he doesn’t want known. And his awful friend is also hiding secrets, as is the fiancée.
I really hope it continues to be good, and I hope the awful characters get the punishment they deserve!
