Interesting post IGS. I looked up that list and Ireland is at No.14, the UK at 40 and the U.S. at 43. That very much bears out my experience working in media and PR over the years. U.S and UK journalists are far "tamer" than our own media. In fact our RTE (the National TV station) Washington Correspondent got in dreadful trouble with the White House when she had an interview with George Bush Jnr and tackled it the way she would have were she talking to an Irish Senior Politician.
We may have a blasphemy law on paper but the reality is anyone can say pretty much whatever they like here. Just because one nutter seeks to charge Stephen Fry with blasphemy doesn't mean it's going to happen and is not in any way reflective of the situation regarding freedom of speech in Ireland as a whole.
As you say IGS, just looking at the situation on paper does not give the true picture.
