Gary Oldman was on Graham Norton tonight, to promote "Darkest Hour". And he didn't say anything about anything else, but it did prompt me to Google "Smiley's People" just in case there might be new news. And low and behold there actually was the following, from just a couple of days before Christmas. Scottish Daily Mail articleThere doesn't seem to have been anything to have prompted this article other than "Darkest Hour", but it seems to be be knowledgeably quoting "known" detail that I certainly haven't seen before. It quotes "Smiley's People" as being in "aggressive development" with Gary Oldman in talks not just to star in it but also to direct it!

Wow! His only feature as director was a sordid hyper realistic movie so it should be interesting.
He is also a BC's friend and, of course, wanted to direct him in Flying Horse (that's one of the projects I really would had liked to have happened along with LCOZ and the project with David Lowery) so I'm sure he easily could convince him to return!
Also I remember the fake rumor that Oldman would directed and played Claudio in BC's Hamlet. I think it was mentioned by a Vanity Fair profile.

Talking of Lowery, of all the 2017 movies I've seen his A Ghost Story is the best. Guillermo Del Toro agrees.

Such a shame he didn’t work with Lowry but in that case was because the director went for a Disney movie instead the little film! That’s the problem with indie films: sometimes they just don’t happen: The Flying Horse because the budget, LCOZ because delays and finally the birth of his baby, etc.
The version of Yellow Birds with the other director and cast was premiered in Sundance past January but it wasn’t well received by the critics. I read they plan to release it in 2018. A year later!
I hope BC and Lowry can reunite in another project in the future!

I haven't seen "A Ghost Story", but I've only heard good things about it and I do intend to catch it at some point.
But re "Smiley's People", it could be that article was just written by someone who was just presuming nonsense, to effect, based on knowledge that GO had been wanting to direct again (though that was "Flying Horse"). But it doesn't sound like your typical rehash of old info. It certainly was already known that "Smiley's People" was in "aggressive development", even if that specific phrase hadn't necessarily been used. It was made very clear from what was said about the new book and the urgency re that not only so that third film could follow but also so that the screenplay for the former could be adapted appropriately in the light of the details of the new story. And urgency re both "Smiley's People" and the next can only have increased along with Gary Oldman's new Oscar chances for "Darkest Hour".
Tomas Alfredson is still theoretically directing again according to IMDB, though, and he did well with TTSS. There isn't anything very obvious, I don't think, that might take precedence either. But his recent "The Snowman" didn't go down very well at all, so it's not impossible that he's actively lost his attachment to "Smiley's People" as a result. For the record, though, "Smiley's People" is actually in pre-production according to the British Film Council.

Just watched this for the first time, I really didn’t follow the story very well at all. Maybe I was too distracted or something, wasn’t my favorite.

I absolutely love this film! Probably my favorite for the big screen!
It's very subtle and it tells all the story with images. I don't think it's that difficult as some people said it is, you just have to put attention to the details on teh screen. But more important, the plot didn't matter too much at the end because it's always about the atmosphere. It has a very hypocritical atmosphere. You can almost smell teh cigarettes!

Lord, the tension when Peter goes in to recover that file! 😰
It took me a couple of viewings to like it a little more. All those medium to long shots were a bit boring, imo, but I know they did it on purpose b/c that’s a spy’s perspective. Never thought I would hate Colin Firth, but there’s an exception to every rule. 😂
