I just read a few reviews of the new Xavier Dolan movie and OMG! They are destroying it! TBH I think some of the aspects they are criticizing are presented in his work since his early acclaimed movies but it seems until now people are noticing them. Still, the reviews are brutal and I feel for him. I kind of like him even when I agreed that he is very superficial. Some of his visual are great but it seems people saw beyond them this time.

In another theme this tweet by a Mexican film critic is very interesting: She says a lot of movies aren’t taking risk anymore nor narratively or visually and they go for “the anecdote” and just look like TV movies when TV movies weren’t great. In another tweet she mentions A Boy Erased as an example. It made me think because I think she is right. A lot of art-house movies prefer anecdotal ”plots” and are visually very humble. Some of them are actually very good and maybe it’s not something necessarily new (American 90s/00s indie movies?) but they aren’t exactly revolutionary. Compare it to Twin Peaks’ Episode 8 or why not? the visually beautiful Patrick Melrose which could had been adapted in a much more “literary” not risky way (as they did with the first version of Mother’s Milk) but they went for something cinematic.

Yesterday was the day for people with TIFF memberships to go online and wait for hours to get their tickets. How I remember it well! And just like last year, there were tons of complaints on Twitter about the website breaking down.
Last year, someone on Twitter said he was able to purchase advance tickets without having to pay for a TIFF membership, and sure enough - I got the invitation today, too! Tickets go on sale tomorrow for those who aren’t members, but I can buy tickets today only - just because I signed up for all their emails. The offer ends at 4 pm, though (so, in 4 1/2 hours) and I haven’t checked out any of this year’s movies! I was thinking of possibly getting tickets for digital movies, if they have them again this year, so that I don’t have to go to Toronto. Any suggestions for movies??

Women Talking is receiving a lot of acclaim. It’s directed by local filmmaker Sarah Polley.
EDITED I’m reading the line-up!
Edward Berger (Patrick Melrose Director) will premiere All Quiet on Wester Front which was selected by Germany to compete for Best Foreign Oscar next year.
Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave was very well received at Cannes. The same with Jerzy Skolimowski‘s EO and Holy Spider.
Jafar Panahi, who was just jailed in Iran, is always great. They will show his last film, No Bears,
Spielberg’s The Fabelmans should be interesting, too.

Any suggestions for movies?? The only one I've heard anything about is 'The Whale', which marks Brendan Fraser's return to movies after he was sexually assaulted and was so traumatized that he quit acting. I shared the story on the Hollywood sex abuse thread here last year, I believe . His fans are thrilled that he's finally acting again, but there seems to be some controversy around the role. I think he's getting the TIFF award Benedict got last year, as well. I haven’t read too much about the “controversies” around this film (the director is very controversial anyway!) but if it’s about him “stealing” the role to a real life morbidly obese actor then it’s just too ridiculous to take it seriously! Lol

Lol Lol. I'm not following it so I'm not sure exactly what the issue people have is. I'm trying to avoid all this stuff on my feed because it's endless outrage. But I gather it's something about him "stealing" (lol) the role from obese and queer actors. All those morbidly obese AND queer actors out there!!! LOL

And Carlos Aguilar was right and The Fabelmans is being acclaimed. Not really a surprise, simply because Spielberg is a more accessible and according to some (including me!) a better filmmaker than Gonzalez Inarritu so not necessarily there is racism here!
The funny thing is that I was reading a review and it didn’t reveled anything but when it was praising Seth Rogen role in the film I was thinking “I know why you said that about his role!” Lol I think the HBO documentary on Spielberg spoiled this film to me!
Who knows? Maybe Spielberg can win the Oscar this year. It seems it’s pretty weak and more accessible films are making an impact. That’s what populists wanted although they probably would still claim that even these films are boring and difficult and that they should nominate some Marvel flick instead!
