I wondered about that myself. Years ago, my sister and I would deliberately avoid early showings of “family” movies because there would be lots of kids (it doesn’t bother us anymore!), so I was surprised to see so many last night - a school night! Although I have to say that most of the children there were not yet school-aged.

Those grousers need to shut their grumble holes. My kids love those Despicable Me movies, and that's who they are for, not a bunch of cynical grownups. Who cares how large an ad campaign a movie has, or how much it cost? Does anybody complain about ubiquitous advertising for athletic shoes, cars, soft drinks, or any other product? Half the time I enjoy the ads as much as the movie.

Do that, and you're just begging for someone to come down with the flu, or have a "tantrum day" where there is no way they will be able to sit through a movie, or get in trouble and the movie outing is canceled.

In case any of you are worried about buying tickets in advance, they will give you a refund if something comes up - at least, that’s what they do here. I discovered this a couple of years ago when I accidentally bought a (cheaper) children’s ticket for myself online. They clearly state that there are no returns or exchanges for tickets bought online, but I phoned them to ask what I should do. She explained that their policy only means that you can’t do online returns or exchanges - you can in person, though, as long as it’s before the movie starts.
I actually had to do this yesterday! My friend called me from the hospital an hour before the movie to tell me she had a family emergency and wouldn’t be able to join me. I had bought both our tickets online. I went to the ticket counter when I got to the theatre and returned one for a refund. It was that easy! She just checked to make sure that the ticket was for an upcoming movie - so you can’t get a refund after the movie has already shown.

The original cartoon is very short probably 30 minutes. It’s literally just the book! It’s a young kids book and it’s very short itself. A lot of people have said in the past that the reason Dr. Seuss supposedly doesn’t work on screen (with the exception of the Karloff’s short film) is because the extra material added. Jim Carrey’s versión had a lot of added stuff. I think that’s what they are referring there. Anyway new update and the numbers are getting slightly better, according to Deadline: deadline.com/2018/11/the-grinch-bohemian-rhapsody-weekend-box-office-1202498901/
