That's great news! And I absolutely love WWI films so I would be going to see this regardless of whether BC was in it or not, but his inclusion makes it all that more appealing!
As far as I know the phrase "And With" coming before the actor's name means that the role maybe isn't large but because the stature of the actor involved special respect is shown by featuring them last in the credits with that honour. It also could be that it may be a smaller role but it is kind of stand out role - an "attention getter".

It sounds like Sam Mendes is wanting to ape those war films that starred practically every actor of the day. HUGE cast! They're not giving themselves much time at all to make it, though! Doubt it will be a big role, although presumably a highly significant figure. So probably not a huge time commitment for BC. It's the "The Longest Day" syndrome! 🤣 Well actually it is minuscule compared to that film. But, yes, I doubt his role will be large. Still he will be in it! It shows he is still intent on following his game plan of trying to stick close to his family as much as possible.

I am seeing comparisons to Saving Private Ryan. Surely because Spielberg is involve but it kind of sounds logic because he producing war films about male relationships during important battles is now a trademark (my favorite is the Clint Eastwood directed, Letters from Iwo Jima. Another late December release by Dreamworks, by the way!)
The cast is impressive. All of them wonderful actors but the biggest stars are indeed Colin Firth and BC. Mark Strong has a long and very respected career but he is more a supporting actor than a star and Richard Madden seems to be popular right now but in some way, he is the new kid in town.
Short or not, I'm just hoping it's a good part!

Well it's never bad for it to be compared to SPR. I always enjoy any good war film or historical drama and Letters from Iwo Jima was very, very good, but my favourite is still the HBO series Band of Brothers. It still gets to me every time I watch it and that is multiple times for sure!
Dan really liked SPR and even had the chance to watch it with several WWII veterans and then do a story for the paper of their reactions (which were amazing to say the least).
I can't say for sure, but I don't think we have ever missed a "war" genre film ever. Not surprising since Dan's passion and writing milieu is WWI and WWII.

It really hope it’s nothing like it! I know that SPR was probably a great movie, but I found it too disturbing to remember much about the story. Is there any chance that 1917 will be a light-hearted musical comedy?? Ha!

I actually watched SPR at the movie theater when it was released and was a huge experience!
That level of brutality wasn't something we would think Spielberg was capable of! And the sound! I remember you could heard the sound of the bullets as if they were passing near your ears!
I have Band of Brothers on DVD but never watched it! Can you believe it? I understand a young Andrew Scott is in it! He also has worked with Sam Mendes before in the James Bond movies and The Hollow Crown.

Andrew Scott was in Saving Private Ryan, too. He’s mentioned it before in interviews. I can’t bring myself to watch it again to see if I can spot him in it, though.

All the episodes are great but my favourite is #6 Bastogne. There is a very thorough and wonderful review of this episode from The AV Club - tv.avclub.com/band-of-brothers-bastogne-1798180391It pretty well describes why I think this episode is the jewel in the crown that is BoB. The other remarkable episode is #5 Crossroads. Whereas Bastogne focuses on a relatively minor (until then) character, Crossroads centers around the star of the series Lt. Winters, played by Damien Lewis. And he carries the role masterfully. It was my first time seeing Lewis in anything and I was mightily impressed with what I saw. He just embodied Winter inside and out. All this talk about BoB makes me want to rewatch it!😊
