"seasoned supporting cast" ugh. I would like to think that we are not back to waiting for Benedict to appear 5 minutes total in the film, but from the sound of it, it looks so. Still, I hope it will be better than "War Horse" which I didn't like at all (far too melodramatic for my taste).

I was thinking that if it's an anecdotal as War Horse then it should be indeed a small role. Just someone the main character meets in a journey (Mendes mentioned something about a messenger which could work with this theory. But it seems it's also about two brothers...) but if it's about a group of sodiers and their officers trapped in a trench as Journey's End then the roles could be bigger.
I doubt that site knows the actual plot.
Both BC and Colin Firth received a credit of "and with..." which seem to suggest something. Maybe just that they are the famous ones, with Oscar nods and British order titles but who knows? Maybe it's a way of saying we hired this two famous names in special roles to give some class to our film!
We won't know until we know more about the actual plot.
Agreed with War Horse. Visually was stunning, tho. I remember Spielberg said it was inspired by John Ford movies. I understand this will be more adult oriented. After all, War Horse was a kid's film.

I was going to say the same thing - wasn’t War Horse a kid’s movie? It reminded me of those old-fashioned family Disney movies from years ago. It was ok for what it was, but I wasn’t their target audience. It didn’t really keep my interest. I’ve discovered that the best way to watch it on tv is to watch until Benedict dies, and then go back for the final half hour for the happy ending. Everything in between is just filler!

Well I don't know if it was what made the difference to me, but I saw the stage production of War Horse before I saw the filmed version, and loved both.
I also know that the original novel is a beloved book, in the same way "Black Beauty" or "The Velveteen Rabbit" is to others. It has true, profound merit IMO, even in today's sophisticated cynical, "let's all be very cool and above it all" society.
So if it was overly sentimental or just geared for children, whatever it was, it worked for me.
It really resonated with me. I don't think there's anything wrong with being highly sentimental on occasion and since I cried buckets at the play, I was fully expecting to do the same when I watched the movie (and I did).

Maybe I missed that part but my impression is that BC's character doesn't die. He is just captured. We never know his destiny. Hiddleston is clearly killed by the machine guns. We don't see it on screen because it's a PG-13 movie but it's strongly suggested. BC is just shown surrendering himself after he is mobbed by the Germans but that's all! Am I wrong? I am always confused because I have seen fans saying he died in this movie!

Maybe I’m remembering it wrong because I don’t watch after that point in the movie, and I only go back for the end! But the way I remember it, he was the first one killed in the battle. And I remember thinking that there was no need to keep watching because I knew we wouldn’t be seeing him again. But I could have it all wrong!

He isn't killed in the battle at all! Hiddleston is. We seeing mounting Joey. We see his face full of horror. Cut to a German shooting a machine gun and then we see Joy running without Hiddleston.
BC is captured at the end of the battle and he is actually great in the scene. We see on his face a mix of embarrassment, frustration and confusion. He decided to do the charging thinking they were fighting a XIX century battle that they could win with strategy and horses just to find the new artillery.
The thing is you aren't the first person who said he died in the movie! Maybe a lot of fans also didn't finished the scene thinking he died early on!

No, he definitely doesn't die, he is captured by the Germans and his face in his last scene in the movie was priceless. But yes, I am a bit tired of B. being great in 5 minutes of the films he is in, like AOC, WH, 12YAS, BM and such (let us not bring back The Other Boleyn Girl, lol).
