A lot of potentially polemic (in certain quarters) quotes here: Thanks to Ruther2!

There’s nothing new, of course. Martin has been saying this for years. I really like that he’s still willing to answer questions about the Sherlock “fans”. There was that one article where he was misquoted as saying he hadn’t enjoyed doing Sherlock, when he was actually referring to the lunatic fans. He was more affected by that whole thing than Benedict was because Martin was much more engaged with fans and social media at the time.
And I like that he makes a point of saying he knows and appreciates how special Sherlock was to people.

He said he enjoyed slash fiction early on. Of course, he enjoyed it in the "that's so silly and funny" way. He then discovered that some people was EXTREMELY serious about it!
BC was also "affected" by it but he was lucky that crazy slash fans decided he wasn't fun about it since the early days because the incident with Caitlin Moran. So even when he later joked about it (OUT magazine interview) in the similar way Freeman did, the extremists slashers decided he was making fun of them and that he hated them meanwhile Freeman loved them. One deluded slasher who I don't know why was hired as journalist even wrote an article in a national publication in which she accused him of discrimination of sexual minorities (with sexual minorities she referred to straight woman who do slash, of course) because one joke (actually by the gay journalist who did the interview for the gay magazine). Her main point was that he didn't have right to do any kind of comment on porn based in his persona because he was just a "white middle aged man". It was a very disturbing and sick piece that surely would had been denounced if it were directed to a female celebrity.
Anyway, the idea that BC hated slash (based in conjectures and out of context quotes) probably stopped those fans of sending him porn and/or threats (anyway he was dealing by then with the other deluded crazies who thought his marriage was fake!). On the other hand, they were sure Freeman loved it! Of course, it was a big surprise when they discovered he had boundaries and kind of hated being harrassed!
I also think they were fooled by their Sherlock personas. They (as the press) misquoted and misunderstood a lot of what BC said in good faith as nasty and rude because he was Sherlock and Sherlock was sardonic and cruel. Freeman played someone who was very easygoing so he was the friendly one, right? In the real life, Freeman is, of course, much more sardonic and with a very dark humor so yes, it was a surprise for the fools when he rightly defended himself in such a way! BC doesn't suffer fools gladly but in general seems to be more open and affable so, yes, they are nothing like Sherlock and Watson!

Iirc, the only thing Martin said about slash was “that’s fine.” He doesn’t have a problem with it, and I’m pretty sure Ben doesn’t either. It’s an offshoot of their work, even if some of it is terribly misguided. I’m sure they don’t read fan fiction about their characters. Why would they? And anyone who sends it to them should have their head examined.
Just the other day there was a Johnlocker on Twitter, all upset because Ben and Martin “aren’t friends anymore.” I suspect she’s also a Freebatcher, but frankly, how does she know if they get along or not irl? They’re two very different people and just b/c they work together doesn’t automatically make them “friends.” Yes, they have great chemistry together, but so do lots of actors. These extreme levels of fantasy regarding two famous, actual people is awfully creepy.
I find Martin a bit opaque, actually. He says the most cutting things with a smile, and grumbles convincingly at innocuous comments. But I do like him. He’s obviously very sharp witted and, while not as personable as Ben, seems to enjoy people. I didn’t realize his and Amanda’s breakup was happening during the actual shooting of Sherlock. That must have been so difficult! But it’s a testimony to them both that they managed to keep it amicable, that’s such a hard thing to achieve.
Also, anyone who thinks John Watson is a relaxed little kitten has not been paying attention. He shot and killed someone in the very first episode, has beaten up Sherlock god knows how many times, and is snarky, grumpy, and shouty. Sometimes I wonder if I’m watching the same show as these people, lol. And then I realize I’m probably not. 😉

Listen to the part of the interview when he talks about Benedict and Sherlock:
