I’m wondering if Amazon will be campaigning Louis Wain for the Oscars, because it totally deserves recognition. It’s too sad to be the uplifting movie they might have intended, but it’s still a beautiful movie, and Benedict is wonderful in it.
I’ve been wondering about this since I watched a very long YouTube video the other day by a woman who was discussing TPOTD with a guest. I think she posts these movie discussion videos all the time. I didn’t put her video in this forum because she’s not a film critic - just an ordinary person who makes YouTube videos. Also, they went into very detailed spoilers discussing the ending.
I really hated that she insisted on starting their discussion with what they disliked about the movie, so that they could end on a “positive note”. But the guest she had the discussion with didn’t like anything about it, so the whole thing made little sense. She trashed TPOTD for half the time, so becoming positive after that was nearly impossible. She admitted that after seeing it in Venice, everyone else in the audience raved about it and she felt like she was the only one who was unmoved by it. (At the end of the video, she said that their discussion has made her re-think her opinion and that maybe she missed something and would watch it again)
The host loved the movie, though. She watched it knowing nothing about it beforehand, and totally got it. She saw it at TIFF (I think) and she said it was the only “big” movie she saw there. She said she’s mainly interested in smaller, independent movies, and movies made by people of colour. Because of that, she also watched Louis Wain because the director is part Asian, making him a person of colour. She really liked it, too.
It never occurred to me that having Will Sharpe as director might give Louis Wain an advantage in awards season, where there is a push for diversity in the nominations.

They are campaigning for it. BC and WS have been in a few events but it seems they main film is Being Ricardos.
