I have to say that I am shocked at how good this list is!

Has he ever turned in a performance that wasn’t his very best? I think not. Even in Fifth Estate, a boring horrible movie, he gave us a nuanced and spot on characterization.

Well I am a big fan of The Fifth Estate but I agree it's hard to imagine that anyone could accuse him of turning in a performance in which he didn't give his all. The man is a consummate actor and seems to always give every ounce of energy into his performance!

Those are all pretty good picks! The only one I’d push back on is The Current War, if only because I can think of 5 other drama roles that would top that. Heck, I can think of 5 other historical drama roles where he played a real person which could top that in my book:
Van Gogh, Hawking, Alexander Masters, William Pitt, Alan Turing
The ET list was very good!
If I were to pick my tops in the TIFF categories, I’d go with Martin Crieff for comedy (Patrick in Sf10 if it had to be film only ), The Angel Islington for Fantasy (Dr Strange) and Quilloughby for Animation (or The Grinch) I could not pick just one for Drama … too many to choose from. And reviewing his performances, I’m reminded that i really wish he’d do more comedic roles… well written films, not just sketches. He’s fantastic at it!

He’s very funny as Louis Wain - for a bit, at least. Then the movie turns very sad. And Benedict does both very well.

Wow, difficult choice!
If we are sticking strictly with FILM credits, then my list would be - DRAMA - Third Star COMEDY - Starters for 10 FANTASY - Burlesque Fairytales ANIMATION - Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
If it were opened up to other forms as well -
DRAMA - Patrick Melrose tied with The Hollow Crown COMEDY - Cabin Pressure FANTASY - The Child in Time ANIMATION - The Tiger Who Came to Tea

That’s a good list! There should be more than ten, but if you have to have ten, those are the ten to have!
