Interesting. So it could be a “man with a van,” Victorian style? I haven’t followed Wain’s story that carefully, but you’re prolly right sgev. You usually are. 😃

Well, he didn't end living in a van (not Cabin Pressure reference but Maggie Smith's) but he was commited to the paupers wing of the asylum before being moved to a better one after being discovered there by a rich visitor doing one of those charity/morbid visit to watch the patients.
The sisters couldn't have a job with a good salary because they were women so he was the main provider but he wasn't good with money and was easy to fool.
I have read a pair of brief bios on Internet. They could have errors or the adaptation could change things.

I wondered about that striped top he’s wearing under his jacket on the beach, so I did a search for men’s 1900 bathing suits, and yes - that’s what men wore to swim! Ha! There should be a matching bottom, too, that he might have on under his baggy pants. And I love his crazy hair in those photos! It looks like they just used his real hair and let it go wild.
