One of the comments to this tweet is “Too gruesome”, but I don’t know if it’s their opinion of the movie or the reason they won’t be watching it. I haven’t read anything about its gruesomeness. I’m worried now! I read some other comments somewhere about 1917 copying Saving Private Ryan. I know that’s not the case, but does it have the same gruesomeness, as has been suggested? To this day, I regret watching SPR because of its violence. Yes, it’s a war movie so of course they’ll show violence, and I know that it’s make-believe Hollywood violence, but I think it crossed the line. I don’t want to regret watching 1917!

You thought SPR "crossed the line" with it's violence and you regret watching it? If that is your feelings I would doubt that 1917 is the movie for you then.
WWI was a particularly gruesome war, as far as wars go, so any realistic depiction of it would HAVE to include shocking violence and gruesome moments IMO, if it's not going to be some "prettified" version that tries to soft sell what happened. That war scarred, both mentally and physically, a generation of people. Violence in war is the nature of the beast as far as I am concerned but everyone has their own level of tolerance for things that bother them.
For me, historical war movies are something that I find enlightening and thoroughly fascinating. I don't over focus on the violence (it's just part of the whole contextual milieu to me). I am much more interested in the emotional and philosophical themes of the movie and whether those things come across in an effective and powerful way. That's what makes it worth watching or not.
From the previews and clips that I have seen so far I'd say this movie may do full justice to my expectations. So I am looking forward to seeing this film most definitely!

I totally understand that there will be violence and death in a war movie, and I’m usually not too squeamish about watching anything in movies. If I do see it, I will probably be alone because I won’t be able to convince my friends to see it. I have a friend who has never even seen Schindler’s List because she won’t watch violence in movies.
There is only one scene in SPR that actually made me feel sick, and to this day that’s all I remember about that movie. I’m sure other stuff happened, but it has all vanished from my memory.
