Maybe it’s sort of meant to be an ode to the soldiers who fought, and the trials they went through, instead of a judgment on war itself. Like They Shall Not Grow Old, that remarkable piece by Peter Jackson that was so riveting. Of course, anything that talks about the Great War is going to end up being a condemnation of it, but there were millions of soldiers who believed (on both sides) that what they were fighting for was honorable and good. They didn’t realize at the time they were just pawns in a squabble between various monarchs.
