I wasn't crazy about Fight Club. Maybe the teen boys who thought it was cool in 1999 are the influential critics now, while the older critics who liked AB at the time aren't anymore!

I understand the woman who died wasn't a formal accuser but an unstable lady that claimed she heard he abused someone and harrassed Spacey. Then there were one or two suicides by actual accusers. That was weird and creepy but until now there is anything that connected it with Spacey.
Also the first case was dropped because the accuser "lost" his phone which, according to the defense, contained evidence that absolved Spacey and because he decided not to declare when he was told he would incriminate himself if they confirmed he altered evidence (deleted some message?). I remember some details and my impression was that the very young guy thought it was funny that Spacey was flirting with him and joked about it with his girlfriend. He was sending her messages meanwhile it happened. Also, I think he was a minor but he was in a bar so Spacey couldn't know it. All that complicated things. The mother is a producer or a news anchor, I'm not sure but there was the suggestion that she was someone "important" and that she was the force behind the lawsuit.

I wasn't crazy about Fight Club. Maybe the teen boys who thought it was cool in 1999 are the influential critics now, while the older critics who liked AB at the time aren't anymore! The thing is I remember it received a good number of mixed reviews and a lot of criticism because the nihilism but I also own a Film Comment issue from that time with a semi naked Brad Pitt on the cover that proclaimed it was a masterpiece (the film not Brad Pitt!) . So some very serious critics were defending it since then. It was polemic that's all! For good or bad, the reactions would be similar to the ones Joker had this year but much less publicized because it wasn't part of a franchise and it wasn't a Box Office hit. I watched it then and I remember I really liked it. I also liked American Beuty which again was considered something different and kind of cynical about the status quo but it wasn't really polemic as The Fight Club. Everybody "understood" it but not everyone understood The Fight Club and as the Joker was considered "dangerous". I haven't watched them since then so I don't know if I wouldn't like them now.

BAFTA is being criticized right now for ignoring non-white actors in its nominations. TBH this criticism is much more valid than in those years in which the Oscars where criticized (Selma wasn't promoted with voters by the studio. The studio should had received the criticism not the awards with a black woman as president; the wonderful Beasts without Nation was made by Netflix in a time awards feared to make theaters owner angry, etc. So it was in general more complex than just plain discrimination). This year there were a few options but they decided to nominate two white women twice! They are both great but why twice? If they really needed to nominate them for both film they could mentioned both movies below their names but they are now occupying two spots when they didn't included POC.
It's ironic because I think the TV version tends to lean for minorities in acting categories and recently announced an almost draconian inclusion policy in which it's suggested they will disqualify series if there isn't a "right" (whatever it is) representation, which could affect films like Hunger directed by Steve McQueen, for example.

They could have nominated more British actors too like Tom Burke or Cinthia Erivo (poc) whose acting was very praised.
One of the most acclaimed British pictures of the year, The Souvenir, wasn't nominated not even as British film. On the other hand poc is getting broader every time. Antonio Banderas is now poc. Spanish and Italians are poc, I guess. Greek possibly too? I hate that term. Awards are very weird. And they are like an echo chamber. The best thing to do with them is not care about them. Anyway, sometimes is fun to follow them. Ricky Gervais' speech at the GG:
Reading it is kind of funny but he's there doing more or less the same thing. This tweet! Some people live in another world.

Not sure what you mean with the Stella McCartney tweet. All of her designs and materials are "vegan" and environmentally friendly. Same type of thing that Benedict wore to the Met Gala.

Talking about being a winner because you use the same suit during the awards as if it were that great. Come on!
Also talking as if some rich people using vegan clothes is doing something meaninful for the future of the planet. Come on!
I'm not critizicing Phoenix, I understand if someone is vegan (not really, I like some meat, but it's a choice). But, not Stella MacCartney selling her products only for the very rich and considering that is going to save the world.

Every little step helps for fighting climate change, doesn't it? I imagine most celebrities do get a new custom made tux for every event. I don't see the issue with the tweet or the sentiment. And she was referring to the fact that he actually was a winner at the awards. I'm not going to start dumping on people for making small changes in their lifestyles.
