“Dad movie” is the expression I’m seeing most often, which I hadn’t heard before. But, I guess it just means a movie you could watch with your dad and both enjoy?
Somehow I don’t think Power of the Dog will get that label.

Somehow I don’t think Power of the Dog will get that label. I am guessing it means that you have the mental age of a teenager and really like something but you can't scream how much you love it because your dad also love it! 😉

Another one who surely hasn't watched Patrick Melrose, or The Hollow Crown, or The Child in Time.

I love that I instinctively checked the profile of this guy to see if he is a critic or just an audience member and his first description of himself is "Dad"! Nice!

I first read “dad movie” when people on twitter were talking about Ford v Ferrari. It’s not exactly meant as a compliment, in the same way that people use “chick flick” to describe a movie. What they mean is “The movie is ok. I didn’t love it, but my dad would enjoy it”. The implication, of course, is “My taste is far superior to my dad’s, so my dad wouldn’t notice if a movie isn’t great” .
When I was little and we only had one tv, we were often stuck watching whatever my father wanted to see. The worst, for me, was Mannix. To this day, I’ve never understood the appeal of it. I was ok with the other boring crime/police dramas he would want to watch, but Mannix was torture. I always think of it as a “dad show”.
