An a mention by Variety: variety.com/2019/film/markets-festivals/hollywood-mergers-cannes-film-market-rebounds-but-big-titles-scarce-1203212596/I hope it sells well. I remember last year it was reported that Ironbark was sold almost everywhere and it was quickly made. Rio, even with that cast and the original director, was presented in a few festival markets but we never had articles saying it was a hit anywhere and it seems to be in limbo right now. Probably because other factors, too but maybe if they would had secured a few key markets beforehand they would had made it by now! EDITED: On the other hand they still haven't made that 355 film that they say it was the biggest hit last year! EDITED: I just checked it and they supposendly will shoot 355 this year but they lost its financer and it's very expensive film! ($75M). I guess Ironbark was much cheaper. The Power of Dog isn't very expensive neither as the article above says.

Well, I finished the book. I can see protests as Phil is a "self-hating" gay character (repulsed by his own sexuality, represses it and acts super macho.) It mentions something like he hated the world before it could hate him. I wondered if the author had a similar experience. We will probably feel just a touch of understanding, with BC's talent for sympathetic villains. But the main issue will be his predatory approach towards Peter. PLOT SPOILERS TO FOLLOW...Phil ridicules him for being a "sissy", first to shame Peter's father to the point that he eventually commits suicide. (This kind of reminded me a little of the parson in To the Ends of the Earth; he is publicly humiliated and loses the will to live.) Then to upset Peter's mother Rose, and to cause the ranch hands to make fun of him. Then he decides to "befriend" Peter in order to take him away from Rose, hoping her alcoholism (caused by anxiety over Phil's treatment of her) will worsen and George will leave her. Phil seems to be grooming Peter for sex (without admitting it to himself), but there is no sign Peter is interested in Phil. Peter is supposed to be 19 or so, so if the actor looks too young there may be controversy about implying that gay men are pedophiles. Hopefully the actor will clearly be of legal age. I won't spoil the shocking ending (nothing to do with Phil being gay.) There is some physical cruelty to animals, as it is a bunch of tough ranchers who view living creatures as a product to sell, and are desensitized to suffering. I supposed it was to parallel the mental cruelty to humans. I confess I kept picturing George as a chubbier Martin Freeman and Phil like a more cruel, cowboy Sherlock (just replace the violin with a banjo.) Mainly because in spite of despising Peter for being a bookworm, Phil got straight A's in college, is proud of his education and likes to show up people pretending to know more than they do. He also is from a wealthy and established family and familiar with society, even while scruffy-looking himself. Physically the character sounds just like BC, but I have trouble picturing him chewing tobacco, castrating cattle and doing a Western accent. He seriously needs much rougher, calloused hands as it's actually important to the character. I suppose they can do this with makeup. And George shouldn't be as cute as Martin. I really wish Philip Seymour Hoffman were still alive to play him. Yes did I mention, HE PLAYS THE BANJO <3 <3 <3 Interestingly, the characters were based on the author's own family (yikes), shades of Edward St. Aubyn.

I just received my book so I'm just on page 20 (the end of chapter one), BC fits perfect to the physical description of Phil. I'm imagining Rory Kinnear as George, tho. Not Freeman! I can't imagine BC and Freeman as brothers! Freeman doesnt look "stocky" beside BC. He is just very small! Also it seems to me Phil is the chatty one. The smarter and cultured one, surely, but also the chatty one, George is slow and stern. I really can see Kinnear in the role!
Probably they will choose an American actor, tho., but who knows, after all they choose a British one for Phil!

I’m *positive* there’s going to be screaming about that movie b/c of the gay themes, BC in general (why couldn’t they find an actual gay Montana sheep rancher? Lol), his accent sucks, why is he in everything, plus gay person as villain will send them completely over the edge. 🙄

We are very early on! Jane Campion is a very sensitive filmmaker and very respected one! I'm sure she would manage the theme in the best way possible.
Also it's an European production which maybe will be released first outside the USA. The audience should be much less puritanical and prejudiced (without offending Americans! I love you all!).
I am very enthusiastic about this. We will see what happens! But they need to make it first!

I’m thrilled about it, too. Sounds very interesting. But there will still be screaming, no matter how sensitively it’s made. Outrage culture is in full swing. 😂

Sure but the good news is that it seems to me the backlash has already begun.
They were always an insignificant number but somehow they got a lot of attention in the media. They have totally infiltrated the media now but more people are expressing frustration with the most extremist claims these days.
