Most of us know about both Sophie and Ben's connections to New York (friends and family) and their home base of London, of course, but I also think I have read somewhere that Ben is familiar with Southern France as a place to vacation. I believe I read somewhere that he listed a particular village in southern France as one of his favourite places to visit. This was some time ago I think. Anyone recall the particulars as to what interview he said this in and where it was?
I agree - the locations all seem ideal for the family to be with him or at least not too far from him when he is filming this project.

Yes!!! This is beyond exciting! I've wanted him to do this more than anything that's been linked to him in years!
As far as locations go, the South of France, London, Manhattan, and Long Island are all very important locations in the books.

This is great news! Any ideas/hopes/dreams/fantasies for potential directors? David Cronenberg for director of the first episode? He can be very dark, but can also find the humor and humanity in very twisted stories. He wouldn't shy away from the perversity and cruelty of the characters. Casting might be tricky because the story stretches out over 40 years and several characters are in most of the books. Patrick's father: Aside from possible flashbacks, he is only in the first book. I think he's supposed to be in his early to mid 40s. Handsome, brilliant, and very cruel. I don't have any ideas. Patrick's mother: She ages from 30s to 70s. I think she's supposed to be American or half-American, and I would love to see Julianne Moore play her. If she couldn't pull off the younger years, maybe Sarah Gadon could play that part. Nicholas Pratt: family friend who is in at least 4 books, maybe all of them. He's deliciously awful and very funny. I think Hugh Laurie would be great, but he might be too old to play the younger Pratt.

How about Thomas Vinterberg for the director? I loved what he did in both Far From the Madding Crowd and The Hunt. Both films showed a deft hand in their direction and I think he is adventurous enough to lend something very interesting to the visuals. Plus a bonus he has already worked with the chosen writer.

I have to admit, TCM recently aired the 1960s movie directed by John Schlesinger and starring Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Terence Stamp, and Peter Finch. I much preferred it to the more recent version, but I should try the other again. Whoever directs any of these episodes has to be brilliant at mixing dark comedy or farce and tragedy.

They'd have to hide his or BC's ears though.

I think Benedict could pull it off playing the young Patrick in this instance. Looking like a man in his early 20s would be a challenge, but with the right haircut, makeup, and (I hate to say this) digital enhancement he could pass. Really a few lines in the forehead and around the eyes are the main issue. He will probably want to play Patrick at this stage because it is a very dramatic episode that will require exceptional acting. It's is also the segment that is key to understanding the older Patrick. You see just how devastating his childhood has been to him, how much it has damaged his psyche. It seems almost impossible that someone could survive such despair and self-destruction. Awareness of how far he can fall imbues the rest of the story with a terrible sense danger. Colin Morgan may be a wonderful actor. I'm not familiar with him. He is certainly handsome. Maybe they could use all that "digital enhancement" to match their ears. Should we give Benedict some lobes or shave off Colin's?

Cumberbatch was surprisingly very credible as a teenager Richard III in The Hollow Crown and he actually played a twenty-something Alan Turing in most scenes of The Imitation Game so I can't see why he would not play the character at that age. Also he is the boss and we know he always tries to play all the characters (do you think he also will play his own father? 😉)
Thomas Vintemberg fist major success was Festen which actually sounds a little like this novels. Actually there are a few themes here that are common in his filmography.

South of France, UK & NY are all locations it's feasible to bring the family to. So he gets to do work that interests him but also spend time with his family. Ideal. I think it's really great that BC is doing this too. There was definitely a WOW when I saw the news just now! We all obviously knew (or hoped at least) that it was on the cards after his name was attached back whenever and after BC specifically said that Patrick Melrose was the character he wanted to play most. But then there's just been no comment about it at all since, and one rather presumed that the project may have lost its way. Nicholls has been writing the adaptation for a long time, and that comment re saying how BC is the perfect Patrick Melrose, may actually be from when his name was attached before. So he may well have had BC in his mind's eye throughout the process of writing it too, which will have been no bad thing. And I don't just think that it's good that BC will be getting to do projects he likes, but I like that he's making these things happen. Given that the books do cover 40 years though, I'm rather supposing that he will only be in the adult books (unless there's a voiceover that would be done separately anyway). So the filming starting in July or August, or whenever (if that's true), doesn't necessarily mean that he'll have to be in all the locations. It'll probably depend on how seriously he wants to watch it all come together in person, but I would imagine his acting involvement would be 3 months at most. Surely he hasn't opted out of the Infinity Wars completely, he's got to go to Atlanta at some point. Has anyone seen any comment from Edward St Aubyn?

Should we give Benedict some lobes or shave off Colin's? I think BC will want to play Patrick in "Mother's Milk" too, and I think he probably will, even if early 20's is a bit of a stretch. I think they'll likely have to stick with traditional methods to erase lines, though, because I doubt they'd have the resources for digital enhancement. That is fiendishly expensive, and beyond a television budget, I would think. Another thing that's just occurred to me, though, is that it isn't entirely congruent that they're only now "looking" for an auteur director re what is apparently supposed to be a fixed shooting schedule already. BC might probably himself be the most problematic element re the scheduling, but still it doesn't make best sense to have a shooting date before they have their director attached.
