Wow! Another of those shitty Film Twitter accounts quoted her and a lot of people are attacking Campion for saying CODA was an easier movie and that she was happy for them. Apparently, the only right comment was “admitting” that the mediocre Oscar voters have a better film taste than critics and festivals programmers! She is actually very diplomatic there! I mean why they would think that a filmmaker who cites Luis Buñuel, David Lynch and Robert Bresson as major influences would enjoy something like CODA?! Lol
Actually, my theory is that they aren’t even reading it! (Or have huge reading comprehension problems!) Like always with Twitter, they are just projecting their own issues and mediocrity on others and hating other because their are just hateful people!
EDITED,
I just read a tweet claiming JC is “in denial” that CODA is a better film! Lol! Who is these people? JC, of course, KNOWS that TPOTD is a better film! She also knows that the Oscars aren’t a barometer of quality! She talked about it even before losing Bets Film (she said she was happy with all the nominations but that Green Book was a recent winner so she wasn’t hoping to win)
You can love CODA or superheroes movies a lot! Good for you! Enjoy them! But it’s just not the same the opinion of casuals to those of people who have watched and studied films for years. And I’m not talking just about “specialists” but about cinephiles. It’s the difference between seeing movies like disposable entertainment and art. CODA isn’t art AT ALL and the Oscars aren’t about art neither. They have never been!

I’m thinking that the misinformed comment above is also a product of believing other misinformed tweet from weeks ago. I mean Film Twitter was convinced that Netflix didn’t want to have anything to do with Campion and other filmmakers like her because someone interpreted a line about Scorsese and The Irishman in a THR article about Netflix plans like they not being interested on artistic films anymore.
First, I personally can’t know which measures they will take but that’s also the case with most people on Twitter. The facts were that the line wasn’t even a direct quote but something said by the author of the article and, more important, the line was clearly making reference to how much Scorsese was asking for the the budget of his film. It was reported at the time that it costs around $200M! In the new interview, it’s suggested that Campion is surprised to be asked if TPOTD costs $30M! There’s a massive difference!
Again, I’m not in positions to say what Netflix will or won’t do but considering they are financing Campion’s pop-up school it’s clear they are still interested in having a close relationship with her.
Anyway, like always, social media fabricates its own “reality” and it doesn’t matter, well, actual reality, they are sure about sometimes very deluded stuff based only on some kind of bizarre consensus between basically crazy people (yes, I’m still creeped out that Twitter decided that the very prominent BC’s lips are inexistent! 😉)

This is also related to my other rant in the Thor thread, but I am just rewatching Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and I just remembered another frivolous line that also creeps me out because it’s factually wrong (like BC’s no lips! Lol) but Twitter is sure it’s a valid criticism: the idea that Wes Anderson never works with non white actors! That’s false since his first movie in which he included a Mexican leading lady and his friend the late Kumar Pallana! I think his only film with only white actors is Moonrise Kingdom!
It’s ok to say that you don’t like the characters they play, I guess. Although in his more recent movies, POC are playing great lead characters (Jeffrey Wright and Benicio Del Toro in the best The French Dispatch segments, for example) But when they say that he never cast POC is just so confusing because it’s very obvious not true and I hate people telling me what I am seeing with my owns eyes isn’t true! Again, it’s frivolous (in this case) but also very creepy! It’s like if you were talking with brainwashed people!

I wonder if he mentions To the Ends of the Earth in his book. I kinda remember something about him being very nice to BC and the other actors after their kidnapping.
It’s a very nice TPOTD and BC mention, tho.

I read the article yesterday. It's about his experience with The Piano. I wonder if BC felt the same.
Holly going full method.
And Harvey Keitel:
Harvey never forgave him.

I guess slightly out of context but I saw an Independent interview (the Turkish version but clearly by a British woman) with Natalie Portman in which the idiotic journalist made very out of context attack against BC suggesting he some how abused his wife with his acting techniques!
Portman says she would never force anyone to call her by the name of her character and then the stupid idiot who wrote the piece says that the only thing she thought when BC said he didn’t bath for TPOTD was about his “poor wife”. Well, I guess that fits with the pseudo feminist view that only men do things like that but if she would had been really worried and informed (a good journalist would had check what she writes before do it, right?! Ok, good journalists practically don’t exist anymore!) she would had known that those “techniques” aren’t BC’s techniques but Jane Campion’s! And she shouldn’t be worried about BC’s wife because every time he talked about it he also was very clear that he only did it (again, after the suggestion/encouraging of his director!) for the two weeks before the shooting because that was exactly the time in which he was alone without his family in New Zealand and he didn’t wanted to bother them but hey! That goes against the narrative!
EDITED I was thinking why not better use the classic Jared Leto example but then I remember one crazy quote by Jared Leto that clearly was just a joke (I don’t remember it!) but these idiots “journalists” posted like an example of his extremism and that made me think that maybe just maybe it’s all on the press and Leto is just privately making fun of their stupidity! That would explain why he is actually so beloved by the acting community while being so frequently attack by social media and press! If he was “THAT” crazy he would be despised by his co-workers.
This is the quote (the first site that appeared when I search for it was, obviously, the Independent!)
It’s about playing an Italian! He was obviously joking but, believe it or not, a few really reported like he being serious!

You’re absolutely right. What a dumb thing to write about him when it’s not true at all! Benedict did all kinds of stuff to prepare for his role for director Jane, but the not bathing thing is what people fixated on.
Meanwhile, Benedict is famous for not taking his roles home with him. Every time he does something new, he gets asked in interviews whether it was hard letting it go at the end of the day, and he always says no. I think it makes for boring interviews, so people tend to forget about it. I think it was only with Sherlock that Wanda said he was grumpier to be around while he was working on it - or something like that.
