In the interview videos that I watched with Benedict, they did mention that the guards were young, 19-20 years old, so it makes sense that they would enjoy dressing up in Star Wars masks to torture prisoners.
It didn’t even occur to me that they didn’t actually say that the restaurant was McDonald’s and they didn’t use the actual McDonald’s logo. Yet, we all knew that’s what it was.
I’m glad they cleared up the question I had about the strobing light during the torture! I had wondered if it really happened or if it was just a filming technique. I thought it must have happened because it explained why he was so upset by that annoying flickering light later on. And I was right!

Yes, it's obvious the guards would be Star War fans because their ages but the mundanity is what make it feel very terrifying. It was a great scene in the film but the masks were deliberately creepy so the shock of seeing Americans as the bad guys/Nazi kind villains probably was softened. Not because that was the intention of the filmmakers because they didn't had access to the real masks.
I think knowing the torturers were "normal" kids who enjoyed to play with Star Wars masks meanwhile they beat, drowned and sexually abused other human being is slightly more impactful because the familiarity with kids who enjoy those characters.

I only took one psychology class in university, but I vividly remember learning about how perfectly normal people can be convinced to do horrible things to other people. I think of it whenever I hear about prisoners being tortured. The torturers are doing what they were trained to do, and it’s very scary.

TPOTD doesn’t belong on that list. It’s not at all based on, or “inspired” by, real-life events, as some of the other movies listed. Maybe they meant to include Louis Wain instead?
The movie about Marilyn Monroe is fictional, too - they even say so in their description. I think this is actually a list of upcoming movies based on books.

I wrote my opinion in TPOTD thread but no, read the headline is about "real events". I guess the more "open" interpretation I can do is that they are talking about realistic plots. They compared these films to blockbusters and how they are ethe opposite in the introduction. Maybe that's what they wanted to say, that these are movies with plots that are not plain fantasies about superheroes or aliens!
