Saw this tonight and I can see it will definitely be an Oscar contender for the two stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. I guess some would say it's an Oscar baity movie.
Personally I think Boseman was stronger in his character than Davis. He was magnificent in a truly scary role. Davis didn't really push any boundaries with hers.
The film itself was too stagey. It just got bogged down by being too much of a theatrical presentation. Even if I didn't know it had been adapted from the stage, I would have known it was just by the total lack of filmic aspects. It works as a stage play - it doesn't as a film.
The themes were topical and yet historic. Not only the racial themes but also the aspects of artistic freedom and ownership. The final scene is especially powerful in both respects.
I have to say that this is Boseman's finest role I have seen. I wasn't really impressed with him in 42, but this one was something he really got his teeth into and it succeeded absolutely!
With Davis, I think she was stronger in Fences. This role is splashy but it kind of lacks the depth she is capable of showing.
Certainly I think it is a film well worth watching. It took a while to become engaged in the story but once that happened I found myself gasping in one scene - surely a sign of total involvement in the characters lives.

Good performances. Interesting that the whole thing takes place in just a few hours. Glad I watched.
