I'm not feeling very well today (I injured myself yesterday and only got about 3 hours sleep as a result), but I'd like to say that I am extremely pleased I got to see this film last night.
Not an easy movie to watch (which I know some people said that about Patrick Melrose, but I didn't find that at all) with the horrifying torture scenes, but the extended scenes were neccessary (as KM said) because he had to show the lengthy process of degradation that MS suffered and that broke him emotionally enough to make false confessions.
I found BC's performance interesting and I appreciate the nuances embedded in it to show Couch's progress in his moral perception of the case that led to his withdrawing from it, in protest to the methods used to wring confessions MS.
But the two actors who really are the centre of attention in this film are Jody Foster and Tahar Rahim. Their performances leave all others in the dust IMO. Of course, they are written that way, with a lot more time devoted to their characters than any of the others, but still they were clearly up for the tasks that they were given!
Loved KM's approach to the material and agreed with all his choices. Funnily enough, one of my favourite micro-moments came during the credits when they showed the real life Mohamedou Ould Slahi singing a Bob Dylan song and then his voice fades out and is gradually replaced with the actual recording of Bob Dylan singing the same song! Very beautiful! But that's just one small sample of many moments that elevated this movie out of the ordinary!
