Snow!

My arms are still a bit sore from shovelling, but feeling a lot better today! They have now issued a Special Weather Statement: It never ends! OMG. YUCK! All the side roads up here are iced over, but it is that bumpy, washboard type ice, so the tires have a pretty decent grip (plus, it is ice with sand mixed in, so not clear or black). Will your house be cold? I feel like I am blowing through heating oil so fast right now. We have been having negative numbers at night and single digits during the day. ETA: The roof struts in my house keep popping and groaning and it is a little disturbing (but normal).

No, we keep our homes very warm during winter. Our houses our built air-tight, so ideally there’s no difference in indoor temperature no matter what the weather. Some people like to save money and use less heating, and some just prefer it a bit colder inside, but not us!
I noticed that there was a furnace-repair van at my neighbour’s house all day yesterday - I hope she got it repaired. I know from experience that those companies work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our furnace stopped working on the coldest day of the year about 10 years ago, and had to be replaced immediately! And my parents’ furnace once stopped working in the middle of a cold winter night, and someone came out to repair it right away.
Before next winter, we have another big job to do - increasing our attic insulation. We had someone inspect it a couple of months ago, and just looking at our crawl space, he said there should be 40 inches of insulation. We had 7! And it’s probably worse just under the roof. He also told us that the shingles on our roof (which we put in new when we moved in) are the cheapest shingles they make, and his company doesn’t even use them at all. Wonderful!

We set our thermostat at a cozy 66°F and of course the furnace only comes in the colder weather. We have a gas fired boiler and hot water radiators in the house. The big old fashioned brass ones that you see in older homes (our house was built in 1946). Our old house had forced air gas heating and I love the hot water rads so much compared to the FAG heating! No static electricity shocks and the air is much more moist.
Today it is above freezing (but the north winds are making it feel much more chilly) but all of next week we won't be above 0°C and nighttime lows are in the minus teens.

So you’re one of “those” people who like it cold in your house! Ha!
It may shock you to hear that our house is set at 75°F, all year. As I mentioned, we are likely losing hot air through our uninsulated attic, so it certainly doesn’t feel like 75°! We have experimented with the thermostat, and that’s what feels best. If we lowered it to 66°, the our pipes would probably freeze. Our house has lots of huge windows, and even though they are good quality and look pretty, they are still glass and not the same as brick walls.
I used to babysit for a family that kept their house colder in the winter to save money. You wouldn’t notice it when you first walked in from outside, but after a few hours I would be shivering. Even though I’d go there prepared, wearing layers and thick wool socks, by the end of the evening even my hands and face felt cold. I remember returning home after babysitting and our house felt so toasty in comparison (my parents still keep their house at 72°F).

I would feel so sick and lethargic if I had my thermostat set at 75°F. I like wearing sweaters and socks in the wintertime indoors and we have a goose down duvet on our bed so I never feel cold in bed. Most the time I just wear a slip nightie to bed. We only have a cotton sheet and the duvet for bedding and nothing else. Long ago we made the decision to get a fairly expensive goose down duvet and I wouldn't have anything else. It's so light and warm!
And I guess I am one of those people who likes things cool. Lol! I can easily live in the cold but the heat just bothers me to no end in the summer.
Luckily we live really close to the lake so it is always a few degrees cooler even on hot summer days. But this year we're looking into getting air conditioning for the entire house. It has to be the kind that cools the entire hous without the use of air ducts because we have hot water heating and no air ducts.
Presently we have an ancient wall unit that only does one room (the family room off the kitchen) but it's well over thirty years old and each year we hold our breath in anticipation of it breaking down!
It'll be nice to have the living room and bedroom cooled in the summer!

I keep my house at 63 during the day, and turn it down to 58 at night. Sometimes when I’m chilled and can’t take it anymore, I scootch the thermostat up to 66, lol, and feel very wicked. It’s fine, mostly, but other people freeze when they come over. 🥶

Our house does not feel like 75°F! That would be awful! It’s just a number on the thermostat. It feels just right to me, but my sister would probably want it set even higher because she thinks it’s a bit cold and goes around bundled up as it is.
I do like it cold in my bedroom at night. I sleep a lot better that way.

I thought I’d share a positive snow story!
I just spoke to my mother on the phone, and she told me that after the snowfall on Monday, someone had shovelled the snow from the ramp going from the street to their driveway. She didn’t see who did it, and was sorry that she didn’t get the chance to thank them. Then, she said, the snow plow came by and filled that same area with snow again, so she went out there herself to shovel it. My mother turned 84 last week. As she shovelled, two women walked by, and one of the women took the shovel out of my mother’s hands and finished the shovelling for her!
Isn’t that nice?

We currently have another Winter Storm Warning hanging over us. The snow started a little while ago, and is supposed to continue until Friday afternoon. Not everyone is going to get that much snow - just my city and Niagara Falls.
You’re probably wondering where we’re going to put all this snow, when the last snow we had is still out there. Good question!

We just got a nice 5-6 inches but it’s going to be -5 F below tonight (that’s -20C for you weirdos). 🥶
Same storm that’s headed to kill off a bunch of Texans. Which normally would be okay with me, they’re all insane down there, but they are human beings, so…Ah, moral quandary. 🤷🏻♀️
