I read that there aren’t neither British films! So only one Latin American movie (in Un Certain Regard section not in the main one) and not movies from Spain nor the UK. They still could announce a few in the next weeks.
It’s fascinating because Americans are very happy with the selection but some comments in Spanish are more critical. Someone said that it’s a very conservative selection and I think he has a point. It probably would had been nice a few undiscovered talents but I think no one could know the real quality of the selection until we watch the movies!
There are also criticism for the Sean Penn inclusion. I don’t think he is a bad director but his last movie at Cannes was strongly panned and a lot of people think his movies are included In Competition only because he is a close friend of Fremaux! Lol

I see a lot of people angry at Netflix on the comments. It seems they think the company refused the invitation just because they didn't feel it and not because they weren't considered for the main section.
Also LOL to the losers angry because BC is the star of the new Jane Campion film and not their favorite. The filmmaker has good taste! I can't wait for her to repeat all the praise she had for him during that Il Cinema Ritrova to event.
Seriously, why some people feel the owners of things like that? Early today I also saw a furry moaning that BC was cast as Louis Wain! A freaking furry! Lol

That’s ridiculous! What company is going to wait 3 years to stream something in this day and age when movies are distributed & out of public interest in less than a year? Most at about 6 months.
Also re: Louis Wain. I would hope that one’s own production company should be able to cast whoever they want, lol.
So many ignorant & plain stupid opinions out there these days. 🙄

The thing with France cinema and their laws is that they have a very strong film industry allegedly because the extra protection those laws give to them.
And then you have the romanticism of the idea of cinema as a comunal experience and the big screen.
But like in America, it's mainly a comercial issue: the owners of theaters are a powerful force (nowadays pretty hurt by the Covid-19) that feel threatened by streaming services.
Cannes originally included Netflix films in 2016 or 2017 but the fury of theater's owners was massive and the festival not just retracted the next year but created that very strict rule against Netflix (The opening film, Annette is actually an Amazon movie but Amazon always respects theatre’s owners wishes)
But yeah, it feels a little like going against modernity. Theathres survived VHS and cable TV and surely they will do with streamings but at the same time TV screans are much better than in the past (some have even better quality than some theater's screens) and then you have Covid-19. Also, movie theaters and their audience are nowadays more interesting in certain kind of films and they aren't the kind of films that normally go to Cannes.

Then there's this,
Films on the big screen is a very romantic idea and you can't avoid to want to defend it but it's increasingly also elitist for, again, artistic films. Thanks to VHS, DVD and now streaming most people not living in big cities/countries could have access to quality cinema.

They talk a little about Jane Campion at the beginning of the video and question why would Netflix accept to have someone like her Out of Competition.
