He is a Democrat and I not doubt a liberal but he also clearly has a lot of prejudices against women and gays. So I totally agreed with you. A lot of people "defending" him is using the Brokeback Mountain praise as an example that he isn't homophobic and that he just didn't liked the movie or that it's not historically accurate (again, false!) but along with the other BM quote from imdb, it's clear that homosexuality in westerns make him uncomfortable. The difference between Ang Lee and Jane Campion apart of their sexes is that Lee is a close friend and he clearly didn't wanted to offend him.
I'm not sure if he talking again is for the best. His people probably are protecting him now and it's the best for him and maybe also for the movie to let it die but yeah, some reactions are just pure vile and even when I agreed it's for the best not to read comments, it's also important to understand that these kind of opinions exist out there! It's easy to forget when we only see the praise and only progressive interpretations of the film but with it becoming increasingly popular and bothering close minded liberals, it was just a question of time to it being attacked by right wing extremists and proper bigots.
EDITED Here is Marc Moran version. He was also kinda surprised but not because is "a grandpa opinion without trying to defend it", he says.

Not that I want to defend Sam Elliott, but I don’t think he meant anything like this. He was just sounding like a cranky old man whose comfortable wild-west territory was being invaded by outsiders who didn’t belong there. He wasn’t against women directors or gays - he just don’t want them in westerns! It was sexist and homophobic and a dumb thing for him to say, and he must have been drunk to say it, but it’s up to him now to speak up and clear his name. He’s the one who has to separate himself from these horrible things people are saying because of his comments. If he says nothing, then he’s agreeing with them. Apparently, the DM papped him and asked him again about the film! His answer, That's practically the whole article! Lol The headline,

That’s pretty funny! Whether or not it’s true, SE should just continue to claim to know nothing so that he doesn’t have to explain himself. Some people are so eager to look for deeper, more profound meanings to the dumb things others say!

Something much nicer, here is the recent Campion’s BAFTA event (the day before the COVID result!), I just saw this and the part about her work with the actors is very funny! She mentions the dinner KSM talked about but the interesting part is that she says she copied it from Francis Ford Coppola method for The Godfather! She also says that actors are now talking about the rehearsals as something they loved but that they were very reluctant then! TBF I think both JP and KSM have both said they doubted about them at the beginning and it seems to me that BC and KD were the ones more into them and into Campion, in general (I mean BC didn’t shower for a week when she asked him and Dunst made her housework!). But she tells an anecdote of her asking BC and JP to do a 6 hours walk and KD being the one protesting because JP “doesn’t walk! Because he is from LA!” Lol She said that BC and JP weren’t very happy with her because she banned them to talk to each other after certain point of their walk. They wanted to chat during the whole trip but she wanted them to feel the separation. She says that she doesn’t know if those exercises really work but want to think they do! Lol

I have a new theory! Phil flings those lit matches around so much I’m convinced he’s subconsciously trying to burn the ranch down which would free him of the psychological burden of his past. 😃👍🏼
