I thought it would be better to have a new thread considering Venice is a major festival and that it’s now confirmed.

This comment is interesting,
I also think she preferred Cannes because she and Frappier talked a lot about it but also both clearly understood that will be a problem when they accepted the Netflix deal. Both have talked about it and Campion declared she just always will go when she could be totally free to do her thing.
This is not the case but I have seen a few comments suggesting she was somehow unfairly treated by Netflix because the movie didn’t went to Cannes.

Lol. I also like this tweet,
I’m sure it’s much more complex than that! (It says Netflix only produced it to bothered Cannes!). Netflix actually has a few very intelligent buyers who used to work for indie studios during the 1990s and who have excellent taste on films but I also remember how naughty was Netflix when they bought it! They didn’t announced it until a few days after the festival ended and the very day the awards were handed out they announced they had bought a few of the winners! First they went for competing titles and then they went for one of Cannes favorites!
EDITED I’m seeing my translation is wrong! He thinks Netflix wanted to “seduce” Cannes to accept the film! Lol Maybe but again, Cannes asked for the films according to Frémaux himself so… it’s more complicated than that!

This guy is from Screen Rant. I haven’t seen either of the movies he compares to the POTD.

I have watched it. Both excellent and hyper masculine. I don’t know. Maybe Daniel Day Lewis character in There will be Blood is a little like Phil except that the last one isn’t an hermit who wants to be alone with his son and not having contact with anyone else never. Phil is actually very sociable and cares a lot about what others think about him. He wants to be loved by some and feared by others. They are similar in that they are bigger than life characters, they are evil leads and they are the WHOLE movie/book.
The No Country for Old Men comparison is more perplexing. Maybe he is thinking on Don Winslow book. You know, because the drugs and the Mexican cartels. Or maybe because both are some kind of modern realistic westerners or because they are very serious stuff or who knows?
EDITED Actually the Coens aren’t very serious nor Thomas Anderson nor Campion! They could be very cruel, sordid and pessimistic but always with a lot of irony and dark humor. I guess that’s also something in common!

There Will be Blood is one of my favorite movies! It’s inscrutable, super dark, horrible, and of course DDL is perfection. It does reflect in No Country b/c of the general tone, and I can see a connection to TPotD. Not in plot or characterization, but the auteur way it’s filmed, and similar tones. Dark psychodramas, real powerhouses, terrific acting.
I am so excited for this film! I fully expect BC to get an Oscar nom for this one. 🤞🏼

I thought on the dark tone, too. But TBH we don’t know the tone of TPOTD yet and I doubt he does! I mean, yeah the source material is very dark but because it’s Campion, I can imagine it being more poetic and beautiful with some green landscapes instead of the moodiness of the other two. Obviously, with her cruel streak added to the mix!
