I like the Hamlet comparison by Savage biographer because in that regard, the protagonist is Peter and that interpretation of the story has sense because it’s clearly an alter ego for the writer. The interesting part is that he seems to identify so much with the hateful uncle (this story Claudius) that he made him the main character. At least in this book (he appears in other forms in other novels). He despised him but at the same time he seems to understand him very well. There is a little of self-hating in all of this, of course. Like Phil in the book.

Does any of the movie material we’ve seen so far say “based on” or “adaptation?” I think, if she’s leaving out Peter’s dad then it’s going to be very much different than the book. I hope she doesn’t. That character is, in a way, a catalyst for Phil’s own downfall.

No, it’s only that he isn’t listed in the cast list on IMDb and that the longer synopsis mentions that the Burbank brothers first meet Rose and her son when they visit her restaurant.
I mentioned that if that’s the case Peter’s actions seem more vicious and cruel than in the book but apart of that I don’t think it could affect the main plot line a lot, the one about Phil, of course. We would lost all Rose’s past story and the explanation of how she and Peter ended in that awful town!
But yeah, we still don’t know for sure.

Also the part of Jane Campion’s directing style as a con sounds offensive but I know what he is talking about. She is great, much better than most Oscar winners but she isn’t easy or accesible that’s why she not just didn’t received another nomination since The Piano but was unfairly despised by mainstream film critics. She is more art house than Oscar baity and it won’t be surprised if she just shock some sensitive souls with her film.
The festival comments are the only ones we know for sure are by people who watched it. They are obviously positive but yeah, they claim is a “hard” film to watch. Here is Alberto Barbera,
Yes, I love to gratuitously post his comments about BC’s performance! 😉 But also, very excited about the whole film!

Sasha Stone, on the other hand, think Campion is the strongest factor for the movie only because she is female (probably this is slightly more offensive, doesn’t! Especially for someone like Campion) but that her film sounds very dark.
I don’t think she knows too much about the movie because, well, she admitted it and she is only predicting Jesse Plemons in the supporting category. It could happen. He is brilliant but his character isn’t very meaty. Actually, Kodi Smit-McPhee has a more showy role than him.
EDITED By the way, there is this viral thing asking for the first movies people watched of a few filmmakers and it’s fascinating the number of Film Twitter people who have never watched a Jane Campion’s film. There is even a Film journalist claiming to work in a few mainstream publications! Apparently, they all are young people who rarely have watched something from 10 years ago and Bright Star is 13 years old so..

Google Translate says this reads "an unpredictable Benedict Cumberbatch role in usual and complex, partly also ungrateful I must say , but which conform his great skills as an interpreter." Anyone here better at translating Italian?

I’m pretty sure they mean “actor” instead of “interpreter”. Also, “ingrato” can mean “thankless”. If that helps!
