That Variety piece is my favorite article today! I was thinking on Meg Ryan because it mentions how In the Cut affected/destroyed her career. It’s interesting how actors knowing this are still desperate to work with someone so daring and challenging as Campion but I guess, it depends of the image they have. Ryan was considered pure and innocent and suddenly she was there naked in an erotic thriller doing sexually explicit scenes. It wasn’t the only factor, of course! She was suffering of bad publicity because her divorce and romance with Russell Crowe and she wasn’t a young woman anymore. I don’t think Nicole Kidman would had been affected as she was because Kidman was already doing daring stuff. Anyway, I googled her and found this David Thomson review defending the film and Ryan, newrepublic.com/article/101169/in-the-cut-meg-ryan-campionHe gets lyrical about Ryan’s body which I know it’s considered politically incorrect nowadays but hey, Amy Taubin also gets lyrical about BC’s body in her piece!

I was thinking that I should post the BFI video here too because she also talks extensively about her career (especially her shorts),
Also (again) she was asked about her tendency of casting big stars playing against type. Specifically, Nicole Kidman and BC (at 00:43:40) but they, of course, aren’t the only ones. BC’s performance has been widely acclaimed like the performances of Holly Hunter and the men in The Piano but the wonderful performance by Meg Ryan in In the Cut was unfairly ridiculed and scoffed at the time. She also talks briefly about how Kidman received some flak when it was announced she would play Isabel Archer, too. Of course, the perception of Kidman as actress has changed in a huge way since then as the perception of a few Campion’s films.
I searched for my Ellen Cheshire book about Campion and it’s not a very depth or insightful book but it’s a good guide to Campion’s filmography. It’s mostly summaries and short reviews that mostly agreed with the general opinión about Campion’s movies but I like that she actually centers a lot on the theme of actors playing against type. Here are her words about The Piano cast:
She doesn’t considers Portrait of a Lady a successful film and one of her disappointments seems to be that John Malkovish didn’t played the role he was originally cast: the noble dying and delicate cousin. That would had been against type but he ended playing a very “type” role in Osmond (he was great as it’s Martin Donovan as the cousin). Apparently, William Hurt was the original Osmond. That would had been against type but Hurt doubted in playing such a bad guy so he didn’t do it. Remember Campion said that she hired a Brit for Phil because Americans only like to play heroes? (Of course, Malkovish is American but you can allege that he is mostly a character actor when Hurt was kind of lead, at least for a time)
Anyway, I found that interesting. She really loves actors, especially famous actors, and she loves to play with them. Sometimes she is just ahead of everyone else and see in those actors things that closed minded people doesn’t see until too late.

I am leafing through my pair of books about Campion and in the interviews ones, I found a line from a Vogue article from 1997 in which the author claims Campion wanted, at one point in her career, dedicated herself to direct porn films for women! Lol

One of the books also mentioned the documentary about the behind the scenes of Portrait of a Lady that it’s nowadays included on the BluRay. It supposedly shows her working with the actors in a very real and crude way. I haven’t watched it. I originally watched the film on, I think, VHS so no extras! Lol I recently rewatched it but it was on the HBO streaming app (it was before HBO Max which just arrived to Latin America earlier this year. Luckily, it’s cheaper than the old HBO app!).
I remember that someone posted bits of it on Twitter some time ago: Kidman was crying and Campion comforting her meanwhile, the thing people were laughing at, Malcovich had an expression that seemed to suggest he was thinking that everyone around him were crazy!
Anyone it’s on You Tube,
