Sgev, That reminds me of a story: a long time ago, back when Blockbuster rentals were a thing in the US, I rented a video based on a reference in a Nancy Griffith song and IIRC a comment in a Bono interview.
It was Wim Wenders film called Wings of Desire. I loved the film, and to my 20-something self, raised between the lines in New England, seemed a window to the wider, cultured world; though my cosmopolitan friends I hung out with in Boston would ‘get it’, my suburban friends would not (or would deny it if they did).
A month or so later, one of my older sisters came to visit for a week. She’s lovely; we get along fine but she is a bit, for lack of a better description, more between the lines, tightly wrapped than I am.
One day I came home from work and she was a bit on edge. After dancing around things a bit, she asked me if I had money problems. Um… no, at the time I was financially fine. But she was still dancing around something. Eventually, she fessed up, she’d opened my mail: she’d seen by Blockbuster account statement, why did I have a late fee for a movie called “Wings of Desire”?! Did I have a porn addiction? Why hadn’t I returned it on time, was I obsessed with it? Why was I watching it in the first place?
There were so many layers to wade through:
# 1: you’re visiting- don’t open my mail # 2: why are you so nosy … and judgmental? # 3: Oh, BTW, Wings of Desire is a German art house film about angels and how they relate to humans, with a lovely performance by Peter Falk aka Columbo ps NOT a porn movie. Also, themes of unrequited love, which I could really relate to at the time. I had a LT friend who fancied me, but I didn’t feel the same way; meanwhile I had a mad crush on a man I worked with, who didn’t fancy me # 4: if a grown adult wanted to watch porn in the privacy of their own home, why, exactly would that be a problem? (It wasn’t, I wasn’t, but so what if I did?) # 5: some rant about privacy issues referencing the US Supreme Court Justice David Souter who somehow had his Blockbuster rental history and library book records leaked during his Senate confirmation hearings, which made me wish the US had adopted Germany’s more comprehensive personal privacy laws.
I still have the Nancy Griffith song (if wishes were changes ) in my playlists, along with a few tracks from the Wings of Desire soundtrack. I’m guessing that either Moffat or Gatiss had seen the film or maybe just Paul McGuigan, because there is definitely some imagery in S1 Sherlock episodes which echoes imagery RE the angels watching over Munich in Wings of Desire.

That’s hysterical! It wasn’t her business at all! Lol
Talking about the Wings of Desire soundtrack, there is a BC connection: Nick Cave is in the film and more recently, in Louis Wain.

Lol Hannah Lee, in 1969 my mom and I were visiting her parents and we wanted to get out of the house for a while, so we told her we were off to see True Grit at the movie theater. She got very upset and didn’t want us to go, and when we asked her why she said it was a dirty movie! We were like it’s John Wayne! It’s PG-13! How much more clean can you get? I don’t think she believed us but we went anyway. I can’t believe she thought her daughter was taking her 12 year old granddaughter to a dirty movie, lol.🤦🏻♀️

I just bought The Piano. I haven't watched that film since probably the 1990s! I actually bought it then but on VHS! So now I will have it in another format! 😉

LOL to the under the bed shot designed to show the chaps, how it’s possible that someone who had made a huge number of films like Sam Elliott thought the chaps were something accidental by ignorant filmmakers meanwhile Campion was “screaming” with her camera: “see how this guy is so crazy that he wears chaps inside the house!!!”

People made a similar comment after the first trailer/teaser for TPOTD came out. They attacked the bad filmmaking that allowed a 1920s character to be accidentally filmed wearing converse tennis shoes!
