The “logical” critics that Hitchcock hated! But at least they needed some extra information outside the film that they didn’t have (because their ignorance and prepotency, they assumed they were right!): Converse existed at the time even when they aren’t common in western films. The films isn’t also a classical western. They aren’t in the 1800s but in the 1920s. The cowboy is already a myth and the old ways are clashing with an overwhelming modernity.
The thing about the chaps is that their out of place quality inside the house is being pointed by the camera! Elliott works in films so he should know that those shots are there for a reason. It’s clearly something about the character not about accuracy. Again we are in the 1920, the Western conquest is a myth and this guy is playing with the myth to such an extreme degree that he wears chaps in places he shouldn’t. He is also very anti hygienic. That’s the main plot line!

The film also had multiple shots of characters in those newfangled horseless carriage thingies aka automobiles… which are also not authentic to the “Old West”. A big clue that the setting is not the 1800’s Wild West.
Yet one character’s clothes have them all riled up, because it hits a nerve about their image of what makes an acceptable cowboy and Western.

The book it’s obviously more explicit about it. Phil is critical of the ranch hands for buying cowboy stuff in the Sear catalogue! They aren’t “real” cowboys because by then cowboys are mythical figures like Bronco Henry but Phil himself is also performative in his behavior. He is a rich kid from Massachusetts enamored with the cowboy legend. The chaps in the house are obviously very telling.

Can you imagine the outrage if they had included scenes that were in the book, of the cowboys opening up their Sears mail-order packages and trying on their new fringed cowboy shirts?
Peter’s white shoes were part of the plot, too, along with Phil’s indoor chaps and boots.

This is a the backstage press conference after Jane won her Oscar. I like it because it’s very calm and Jane doesn’t sound as scattered as she sometimes does when she’s excited and trying to express herself. She’s very articulate here!
