Here is a list of awards oriented Netflix originals and festivals (I didn’t included 2020 because with the exception of a planned Da 5 Bloods in an out of competition spot at Cannes, they didn’t went to festivals because the Covid-19)
2019
The Laundromat Venice, Toronto and San Sebastián
Marriage Story Venice, Telluride, Toronto, NYFF (Centerpiece) and London
The King Venice (out of competition) and London
The Irishman NYFF (Opening Night) , London and Lumiere
Dolemite Is My Name, Toronto
The Two Popes, Telluride, London and Toronto
Atlantics Cannes, San Sebastián and NYFF
2018
Private Life Sundance and NYFF
Outlaw King Toronto and London
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Venice, London and NYFF
Roma Venice, Telluride, Toronto, San Sebastián, London and NYFF (Centerpiece)
22 July Venice and Toronto
Happy as Lazzaro Cannes and NYFF
2017
The Meyerowitz Stories Cannes, London and NYFF
Okja Cannes
(The year when Cannes got in trouble for including Netflix films in their official competition section)
First They Killed My Father Telluride and Toronto
On Body and Soul Berlin and Toronto
Probably I forgot something but I think those are the major award films.
TPOTD is officially at Venice and NYFF but it seems it will also be at Telluride. There is a rumor that a good number of studios didn’t want to go to Toronto (which accepts almost anything as you can see above!) because they will stream the movies (it probably has sense when the film is already produced by a streaming service company) but they can still added it at last minute. I doubt about San Sebastián which it’s necessarily an awards race festival and London Film Festival hasn’t announced its line-up yet so maybe.
There is also a strong possibility that like The Irishman, it will be shown at Lumiere considering they will do a homage to Jane Campion.
So yeah, it seems Netflix has a lot of faith on it and the trajectory suggests it will follow the successful Netflix cases. We will see, of course!
