As The Power of the Dog will almost certainly be nominated for an Oscar, I opened this thread to comment on the other films too.
I wanted to comment on, imo, horrible pictures from House of Gucci like these:
and why were so many people looking forward to this movie. Now they dropped the trailer and at least some people are coming to their senses. Why are Americans so critical about people doing American accents and have no problem doing horrid non-American accents? Why do they find it necessary to fake them in the first place? Do they think that give authenticity to the movies?
By the way, this movie brings me memories of the Versace show which won over Patrick Melrose. At least that show had some latin/hispanic actors playing the Italians (why they didn't get Italians?) and looked better. This movie has Driver (what was he thinking?) and Leto playing Italians.

I agree with this. The same kind of thing did Guadagnino casting Tilda Swinton as the old man in Suspiria.

About the accents, there are New Zealand people criticizing the great Elizabeth Moss for her Top of the Lake accent and Scottish people criticized the Scottish accent of Paul Schneider in Bright Star. Both were deservedly acclaimed for their performances in the USA. What the hell, I have seen people criticizing Harvey Keitel accent in The Piano! That’s only Jane Campion films, of course!
Some Americans on Twitter are just very silly about it. I saw not one but two persons worried about BC’s accent in TPOTD because “he isn’t good doing Southerner accents” They don’t even have a clue where Montana is in the map but somehow are experts in local accents! Lol
Benicio del Toro as a Mexican policeman in Traffic was particularly awful but it’s possible to look beyond it and see the great performance.
All the concept of people from foreign countries talking in English with each other with funny accents is actually in another much higher level of suspension of disbelief than a non-perfect foreign accent (after all real people in everyday life can talk oddly even when they aren’t foreigners) but if the movie is really good you can forgot it by the end of the day!
I think movies like House of Gucci and Blonde are hyped to hell because the obsession of award pundits with pretty young actresses in pretty dresses winning Oscars. They both have female leads so any possible issue with the films is interpreted as something positive (who knows? Maybe Blonde is a mistreated masterwork but still how it’s good that Netflix had refused to released for now two consecutive years! It’s not good at all but still some on Film Twitter think it’s cool because Ana surely will win in 2023!)
Just look the comments against Kirsten Steward on the award forums. She seems to be the lead now because her movie was accepted at Venice so she is now being viciously attacked by the other fanboys.

On TV, they just said that Jared Leto is chameleonic! Lol The make-up department is the chameleonic one!
They show the trailer and I watched it for first time and yeah, they sound silly. We will see. The creepiest thing was they also show her fans reaction to the trailer! It will be brutal!
I won’t be surprised if the Versace vs Patrick Melrose thing repeats. You know, the frivolous accesible movie about murder in the fashion world wining over the difficult complex and disturbing artistic film, tho.
EDITED And don’t get me wrong, I think Ridley Scott is a much better filmmaker than Ryan Murphy.

I saw a clip of the Gucci movie last night, and I’m still not over the bad Italian accents. Why would anyone think this was a good idea? And why are they speaking English at all? Doesn’t it take place within a family - in Italy? It would be much better for them all to be speaking with their own American accents. Or, hire actual Italians and put in subtitles. I said it about the Versace miniseries and I’ll say it again - Italians don’t speak to each other in English, especially in Italy!
I found articles about the Gucci family complaining about the actors portraying them. Even the killer is upset that Lady Gaga never bothered to speak to her in person before playing her on film. Ha!
Besides Jared Leto, I also think Adam Driver is all wrong for the part. He looks nothing like the real Gucci, who was handsome and blue-eyed. There are probably lots of Italian men that had the right look. Giving AD a 1970’s wig and glasses doesn’t do it. I know that having a strong resemblance isn’t the most important factor in a performance, but I find AD creepy-looking and I can’t imagine watching him trying to play a suave fashion designer.

TPOTD being in all those Festivals is very exciting but the Oscar prediction chat is very cringe worthy!
I just saw someone on Twitter saying that TPOTD is very "conventional" and old style for the new allegedly daring Academy's taste! Really? Lol I actually think some voters will be scared to death by it! Funnily, I think the guy is betting for Lady Gaga and her very Hollywood movie. Obviously, they were talking about actresses!

I just saw the trailer for Gucci and my god! That looks like a super slick, incredibly banal, Oscar baity, pure Hollywood piece of crap. Lady GaGa is a shoo in for the Oscar. I despair.

I was reading lots of hilarious comments about the accents, but Italians (in Italy) don’t care all that much. It seems that they’re used to bad Italian accents. And besides that - they’ll get a version of the movie that’s dubbed into Italian, so they won’t even have to hear the horrible accents.

The trailer is not the movie so who knows? Maybe it's a masterwork! I just found funny that some think that pulpy crime stories are challenging or daring. It's like saying crime section of tabloids are challenging or daring. They are not! Maybe some decent people would feel bad readings them but certainly no one would feel challenged by them!
