He had the Brokeback Mountain dialect coach with him on set so surely he did. I think he sometimes commits the “error” of going for the way the real person talk and not the standard or cliche accent that randoms on Twitter would easily identify. By the way, she recently added him in his list of clients on her official site, www.joyellison.com/He is the first one!

Since he’s not playing a real person, he shouldn’t have to worry about a particular accent. I think it’s important that all the characters sound the same if they’re all from the same place. Do we know if Kirsten Dunst can do a Montana accent - if there even is such an accent?
I see that Benedict decided his own nice teeth weren’t in character - again! And Phil is a fictional character!

She appears in the credits as dialect coach of the production so maybe she worked with everyone there as she did with the cast in Brokeback Mountain (one young actor listed her as his dialect coach in his CV) but she only added BC name in her own site.
I remember we posted here an old interview with her about her work in the Ang Lee film and she says Montana accent was a little like Canadian.
Yes, his teeth look dirty and his nails are hideous! Lol Exactly how I imagined the character! There is also a lot of touching things with his dirty hands in an almost erotic way. That’s very Campion! He touches that saddle after Peter was in there, doesn’t? Again, very Campion!
Having read the book, you can tell almost all the scenes in the trailer. It’s so obvious when you have that info. And those scenes there are so relevant for where the story goes that is even more chilling!

I don’t remember the comb from the book. Somebody refresh me?

Me neither but I noticed that those nails look clean so maybe those aren’t BC hands! EDITED, Oh, boy! I found the scene… Upstairs Peter stood at the dormer window that looked on the sagebrush hill, his narrow thin hands one on top of the other. Turning, he went to the mirror over the bookcase where he kept his father’s books, and there combed his hair carefully. Finished, he continued to watch himself, and dragged his thumb across the teeth of the comb. His lips formed a single word. ‘Phil ...’
By the way in another paragraph it says Peter always carried that comb and that his hair was yellow! I had forgotten that!

I just turned on our local tv morning show, and they talked about TPOTD and showed part of the trailer! It’s always so exciting hearing people say his name!
And they didn’t mention Spencer at all.

Another speculation about the trailer… The last shot of BC whistling to the camera could be a “dream sequence” of Rose seeing him during the dinner with the Governor. So maybe he doesn’t arrive but he is still there harassing Rose and, you know, Keith Carradine still having a scene together with “Method actor” Benedict Cumberbatch!

I just read yet another speculation that somehow Phil is jealous and wants Rose for himself. I think that plot has people worried because Phil seems scary and they don’t want Rose (or, really, KD) to end up with someone who was mean to her.
Boy, are they in for a surprise!

Well, those definitely haven’t read the book! I would say they should trust Campion but I suspect they would be angered by some of her female characters falling in love and, sometimes, ending with very complex abusive men, especially for modern standards!
Talking about performative feminism, I have seen exactly just ONE person criticizing the film for having someone so young like KD playing Smit-McPhee’s mother! But she still would watch it because it’s Campion! Lol If it was by a male filmmaker there would be more than just one! Remember those unhappy with a 50 years old Jennifer Jason Leigh playing the mother of a 8 years old… who is played in the adult version by 40 something BC! The scandal! Lol
