About the trailer in itself, people should watch it again after watch the film or read the book because seriously every bit included makes a lot of sense and the plot is so clearly encapsulated there. It’s genuinely brilliant!

I’m no music expert, but how on earth are people hearing the Jurassic Park theme?? The first 3 notes follow the same pattern of the Jurassic Park theme, but then it quickly goes in another direction, tune wise. Jurassic park goes “da daa da dun dun, da daa da dun dun” with the dun duns being lower. It is a repeated 5 note phrase with the introductory notes wavering up down and up in a close set of 3 before dropping lower on the final 2 notes, all 5 notes repeated in series 3 times. The POTD whistles are “Da daa da, Da daa da, da daa da duh dun” with Two wavering 3 note phrases followed by a 5 note phrase beginning with a repetition of the 3 note phrase followed by 2 lower notes. But the final 2 lower notes go down then upish, vs down and down again in the JP main theme. So there is a slight similarity in the pattern of the 3rd of the POTDs whistled tune’s phrases, but the end note progression is different. And the first 2 phrases are only 3 notes, not 5 as in JP. Maybe they just have John Williams on the brain lol

It’s genuinely brilliant! I haven’t read the book and I’m a little wary to, I enjoy complex or darker themed pieces, but in a film, you’re sitting with it for 1-2-3 hours, where in a book you’re with it for longer and to me processing it internally so much more, as your imagination is taking the characters and situations and scenes the author creates and conjuring them for yourself, that can make it more difficult to deal with. For example there are films I’ve seen that moved me or stayed with me in a powerful way, but the book or even a well done written review has haunted me or troubled me or shaken me, and not in a good or cathartic, artistic way. For example I still remember getting literal chills and goosebumps reading Stephen King’s The Shining on a hot summer day at the beach. Even though the movie was scary and disturbing, even more so after hearing what Shelly Duvall went through filming it, it’s the book that still haunts me. And it’s probably also the reality of the last several years in real life making me wary of taking on any deeply felt existential angst for fictional characters voluntarily. It’s almost like those of you here who HAVE read it have provided enough insight that I can appreciate the artistry of the teaser without having read it myself. (Or at least can kid myself that I can lol) If I had to guess, I’d guess that I’m going to wind up breaking down and reading the book before seeing this film. And it will probably chew me up when I do!

And it will probably chew me up when I do! The Shining terrified me for YEARS lol. That is one scary book. I read it in the late 1970s and I also live in Boulder where the story begins. I’ve been to the “Overlook” hotel many times. Not killed yet, haha. I don’t think TPotD is scary. It’s a little disturbing in places and there’s tons of subtext (which I admit I’m not very good at understanding), but it didn’t freak me out half as much as reading Patrick Melrose did. It does sort of stick on you for a while but the descriptions of ranch life are wonderful and the end is both amazing and uplifting. As well as just wtf? You immediately go back to read the last few pages again. It’s an excellent novel, I highly recommend it, and you will hate Phil and feel sorry for him and his victims as well. I think reading it will help you understand the movie too. The trailer does have all the major elements in it, which is incredible for something 1 minute long!

The first Patrick Melrose is incredible disturbing! The adaptation was very subtle and discreet in managing THAT scene! Also they did it in a very artistic way! I once read a review that said the person thought the writer was sick and a pervert but after googled him discovered he was actually the victim so she decided to continue reading the book!
TPOTD is incredibly subtle and yeah, full with symbolism and subtext. Like Patrick Melrose is wonderfully written but the styles couldn’t be more different. I imagine Campion will be more open and explicit than the book. She has to because it’s a film. She is a very visual artist so it should be fascinating to see how she translates in images what it’s basically a book about repressed people who never said what they are thinking and sometimes they don’t even dare to admit to themselves what they are really thinking!

Yes, that’s exactly right! And there are lots of other tunes that begin with those same three notes. They’re not that unique!
I suppose the misunderstanding comes, too, from the tempo of his whistling. The actual piece of music is a march, so it’s much faster than the way Phil whistles it. You can listen to a bit of it here:
