Mllemass said - "And can they even be called “spinsters” when they’re little girls? Even when they’re grown up, can’t they just be “unmarried”?"
Way back in 1974, when I was only 20 years of age, I was married and on our official marriage certificate it listed Dan as a "bachelor" and me as a "spinster" for our "status".
I read somewhere that technically "spinsters" were supposed to be single women between the ages of 23-26, but obviously not according to the Ontario government in 1974! Lol!

Also, the WSJ gave TPOTD a negative review. It was a different reviewer, though. No, he is the same guy. He said he liked movies with more traditional narratives, if I remember well. "Narratives" in the literary/structure meaning, not the political meaning. I think Campion is one of those good old art house filmmakers that narrates her stories mostly through images and no just with words. Like "silent cinema" directors, actually! So that's in certain way more "traditional" but we have to wait to see what is Morgenstern detailed explanation because he said that in a festival summary not in his actual review of the film so yeah, wait for a not very positive review.

Yes, you’re right! I don’t know what I thought I had read before. The review is on Rotten Tomatoes, and he hated it.

Wow - that’s awful!
I suppose being older than 26 and still not married didn’t even merit terminology - or maybe “old maid”. They probably just pushed you into a corner and pretended you didn’t exist so that you didn’t embarrass the family too much.
I remember years ago when the laws changed so that women weren’t automatically given their husband’s last name when they got married. They had to apply for an official name change, and I actually don’t know too many who did it!
I remember being surprised the first time we visited Italy, and seeing my grandmother’s name on the mail that arrived. They had used her maiden name. My mother, too, was referred to by her maiden name. I found out that your name didn’t change there when you got married. Women went by “Mrs. Husband’s Last Name” in social situations only.

The old fashioned term for an unmarried woman older than 26 was "thornback". But it isn't one that caught on obviously.
