I’ve been watching those “first time listening to X” reaction videos on YouTube. They’re regular people listening to artists they’ve never heard of before, you know those old, obscure singers like Janis Joplin, Elvis, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Pavarotti, lol. Mostly they’re absolutely blown away by the vocals (as they should be). And of course some of them have very little sense of history/place/circumstance and keep wondering things like if the movements are choreographed and realizing there’s no auto tune, that people used to just stand there and sing like that. Here’s a sample. The always wonderful Tom Jones and his astonishing rendition of “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” from 1967. m.youtube.com/watch?v=QmrcVtrzCjc

These so-called musicians should be embarrassed at never having heard of Tom Jones! I can understand not knowing an obscure singer who had a a one-hit wonder decades ago, but a genuine music star who’s still alive singing??
I always have to laugh at the “before I was born” excuse for not knowing something. It definitely wasn’t like that while I was growing up! We were taught that everything important happened before we were born, and we should know about it. And you don’t have to be a “fan” to have heard of a song, or singer, or movie - which I think a lot of people today are worried about. They think that all their thinking and opinions and social media posts should be about the stuff they like.
When I was in university and we were assigned yet another moody, depressing novel to read for my French class, I asked our professor if these writers ever wrote about happy stuff. He laughed! He said the novels we were studying were their best known works, but they did write other things. That was when I learned that we should really try all kinds of writing or music or movies, even if just to be able to discuss intelligently why you don’t like them.

I listened to Cabin Pressure this afternoon. Specifically the one where Martin goes to his job interview in Switzerland. I think that's one of the best! "We've never had someone rate themselves to two decimal points!" 😅🤣😂

Really? Well, I feel old now that there's a whole generation of people who haven't heard of these legends! Bloody hell! Thanks for the link! I know how I'm spending my evening! Haha! Yes, you feel a zillion years old after watching them. There’s one of Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival and she’s killing it, the camera keeps panning out into the audience to focus on Mama Cass (who’s in awe), and the reviewers keep saying “that lady is certainly enjoying it!” They have no clue who she is. 🤦🏻♀️ Let me know how you get on. 😂👍🏼

Back when I used to watch Pointless on the BBC every day, whenever a contestant said “that was before I was born”, the two hosts, Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, let them have it! It was always someone in their twenties, and the reprimand they received went right over their head. Just like every time AA said “That was before I was born, too!”, the contestant would look at him blankly, not understanding his point.
I was SHOCKED at how often the young contestants couldn’t identify the Beatles or their famous songs! They’re in England! Aren’t the Beatles mandatory curriculum there? The same goes for their general knowledge of Shakespeare - who was way, way before any of us were born!

Listening to Handel's Messiah. The 2014 Boston Baroque performance of it.
Absolutely gorgeous rendition of it!
This has been one of Dan's favourite pieces of music since he was a little boy.

Has anyone else done this?
I’ve been trying to watch the Netflix series I put on my list, and I just reached episode 4 of Close to Home: Murder in the Coalfield. And that’s as far as I got today because I became totally distracted by a song that was played in the first few minutes of the episode. It was just so pretty that I had to stop the show and try to figure out what the sang was, and who was singing. I totally forgot how to do it, so it took a while! But Shazam on my iPad came through and let me know that the song is Love You, by Christian Padovan. I now have it saved on Spotify and YouTube. The song is now stuck in my head, which is nice!
I spent over an hour doing all that!

I think I downloaded this app the first time in 2012, can you imagine?!

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole with this prodigy. She's absolutely superb! I'm linking a video of hers from last year when she would've been 13, I think, but her videos go back to her as young as 8! Amazingly gifted!
