I once had a so-so job that I often thought of quitting. I decided, instead, that I would set up rules and boundaries for myself. I watched what other co-workers went through, and I would think “I would never put up with that!” The day eventually arrived - I was informed that my job was changing just enough to cross that line of things I said I would never do. I told my supervisor that I would not be doing it, and he said “Yes, you will”. So the day before the change came into effect, and I was all ready to resign, I got a phone call from head office telling me I was being transferred, instead. I was keeping the same job, at a much better location, working with much nicer people.
That sort of thing happened to me several times during my career. I would decide “If ____ ever happens, I’m going to leave and look for a job somewhere else.” And every time ____ happened and I prepared to leave, it all seemed to work itself out in my favour.
The last time it happened, we were downsizing and some manager positions were being eliminated - including mine. I was told I’d have to return to an old job that I just didn’t want to do anymore. So I packed up my belongings and got ready to explain to my supervisor that I would be looking for a job somewhere.else. But before I did that, a fax arrived (back when we has fax machines!) announcing that one of the supervisors was retiring. His position was going to be filled by another guy, causing a chain of events that left a manager position open, and I applied for it, was interviewed and got the job. That all happened within two days, and I didn’t have time to tell anyone that I was even applying for that job. And my stuff was already packed in boxes, ready to take to my new job.
