I just finished it. It’s a very good debut by Hall. The photography is stunning and the performances strong. I loved both Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga but the men are also great. It feels slightly theatrical but at the same time looks like an album of old photographies from the 1920’s
The character that BC supposedly was attached to play isn’t tiny. It’s not a cameo at all! It’s definitely very supporting but it has bigger screen time than the racist husband, for example!

Agreed, it's a very confident debut! I thought Ruth Negga was mesmerizing to look at. Was anyone else a bit bothered by the soft focus lens (fuzzy edges all around the screen)? I felt like that was unnecessary.
It would've been nice if BC had been able to do that role. But filming happened exactly at the same time as TPOTD.

Bill Camp was great in the role but I totally can see BC giving his own version of the sardonic and cynical but sympathetic writer. I am sure now that Thompson was joking about replacing BC with Chris Hemsworth, tho., because that can’t be anything but a joke! Lol Nothing against Hemswhorth but that’s not his kind of role…at all!

I watched it tonight, and it was ok. I have a problem with movies that don’t really have a plot. This was really a character study, which is fine because they are fascinating characters, but I would have preferred to watch a story. I agree that it had a theatrical feel, like watching a play, and the almost total silence in many scenes added to that feeling. It was like we were in their heads with their thoughts, blocking out even everyday sounds.
But the movie looked gorgeous, and I loved the clothes. I don’t understand, though, how Irene could be described as “middle class” when she looked wealthy to me! She might not have been quite as wealthy as Claire, but she was married to a doctor, had at least one servant, and lived in a huge beautiful house on a beautiful street.
