I remember hearing that Will Smith refused to do a scene where he kissed another man. So they supposedly filmed him from behind so that you couldn’t tell that they weren’t actually kissing. But I don’t remember whether any of that was true. It gave people lots to talk about, in any case.

Well, I had to check and we both were right, www.republicworld.com/entertainment-news/hollywood-news/will-smith-refused-to-kiss-a-co-actor-for-six-degrees-of-separation.htmlI actually think I remember the original interview. I think it was for the American version of Premiere Magazine which it doesn’t exist anymore! EDITED It’s funny that instead of owning it he blamed Washington! Lol I mean surely he was just saying the true. He was very young then but yeah, “this hyper famous respected actor told me not to do it!” And I know that nowadays wokes think straights were somehow abusing the community when they played gay characters but it was considered a risk. I remember a lot of comments that, for example, Campbell Scott never was the star everyone was thinking he will be because he accepted a gay role. Also most gay actors were in the closet because if a straight guy could lose respectability, obviously the risk was much bigger with them. I don’t doubt it’s still the case today. I actually have read some comments about it.

Hey - I actually remembered it properly! But the reason I remembered it at all is because I didn’t understand why it was ok to film him so that it looked like they were kissing, but it wasn’t ok to actually kiss. Wouldn’t it have hurt his career in either case? Anyone not following the controversy at the time (or anyone watching the movie now, many years later) would think that the kiss took place. I never bought that career excuse at the time, and I still don’t. He just didn’t want to kiss another man.

According to the article he agreed to do the scene but Washington warned him not to do it (again, I remember that he said he told him that the Afro-American community would never forget it and that he won’t be a star) so when he was about to do it, he retracted it and I guess, that’s what the director convinced him to do!
I don’t think he fabricated it because again, he involved someone famous and powerful who never denied it. At least, I don’t remember him doing it and it indeed caused some controversy.

By the way, I didn’t posted the estimated cumulative. Again, they aren’t official numbers and I don’t know their source.

That was a 1993 movie and the AIDS crisis was still in full blow. Additionally, there was some well-known homophobia in the black community around that time, which has shifted as more gay black men have (bravely) come out.
Still, I agree that for most people, the appearance of a kiss on screen is basically a kiss on screen, so I don’t know what his issue was, other than he (is or was?) homophobic.
I saw a tweet earlier today from a critic who said upon 2nd viewing of King Richard his thoughts had changed about his performance. It slipped and the critic feels his performance is not worthy of an Oscar. Not to diss WS too much b/c I’ve always liked his acting style & coolness, but hopefully he’ll fade as a contender, lifting BC into the winning spot!

I actually googled the magazine I think he told that story and it’s this one! I’m almost sure because I remember I owned it but ironically the cover has Denzel Washington promoting Philadelphia! Notice that above it says it includes an interview with Will Smith talking about Six Degrees… They even have red ribbons! I remember the Schindler’s List article, too! EDITED because I wrote “sex” instead of “six” Lol Now I have to watch Philadelphia to confirm if Tom Hanks really kissed Antonio Banderas or not!

I don’t know if the box office could affect its and his possibilities for the Oscars. In other years, that would mean its death! But it’s still too early, we have to wait to see if it receives some awards by others associations, after all critics raved about it! But I have seen a few saying that nowadays it’s irrelevant and that TPOTD, for example, won’t be a success neither but the difference is that TPOTD wasn’t designed to win massive amounts of money. It’s the “arty” film even when it was slightly expensive, it was done because “art”! This film was and supposedly it’s the one that the general audiences would embrace! Supposedly, voters would want to award this because they are “eager” to award a crowd pleaser instead of the numerous arty films of recent years that have gave them bad TV ratings (I don’t think voters think on that when they vote, tho,! But award pundits are worried so…). If that’s the case, why they would go for the failed blockbuster drama?!
At least, it was a Squid Game phenomenon on HBO Max and we will know it soon, this is pretty bad press!
