I’m preparing this thread in advance!
I’m counting down the days until TPOTD is on Netflix so you guys can finally see it and I can tell you all the things I’ve been dying to say since September!

I enjoyed the performances and look of the film for sure so I see why it’s in awards discussions, but maybe knowing too much about it ahead of time made it fall flat for me. Should have done a better job of avoiding spoilers than I did - so if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t read any farther in this thread!
Looking forward to reading more thoughts and maybe it will spark something for me down the road.

That’s unfortunate! I didn’t find that the spoilers affected how I saw it, although it would have been nice to be surprised by the nude scene - ha! Even after seeing it three and a half times, I want to keep watching it to find more things I missed.
Watch it again if you can - if you want.

It’s also okay not to like it. 👍🏼 Of course! There have been a lot of people who saw both and preferred Louis Wain.

When I first watched it, I paid attention mainly to Benedict because that’s just what I do when he’s on the screen! Although I knew what would happen at the end of the movie from having read the book, it was still a surprise to find out how they would get there. It wasn’t until Peter was pacing outside the barn, listening to Phil and George argue about what to do about Rose, that I realized that Peter was up to something. My attention got shifted away from Phil and onto Peter. So for the rest of the movie, I found myself thinking back on everything Peter had done up to now.
For that whole cigarette scene, I don’t think I breathed at all! Peter standing behind Phil, smiling, was chilling when we had just watched him frantic about his mother moments earlier. Then when he asked Phil about Bronco Henry, I saw that Peter had learned from the other cowboys that asking about BH instantly calmed Phil down and put him in a good mood. I remember thinking “Uh oh! What are you up to?” I saw that when Peter touched BH’s shrine displayed in the barn, his fingers went to the heart-shaped bolts (?) that I hadn’t noticed earlier. In one of the Q&A sessions, Benedict said that he had to remind himself that the audience is aware of things that Phil isn’t, like in that barn scene. Phil was being himself, answering Peter’s questions, unaware that Peter was trying to “seduce” him - Benedict stopped himself in the middle of the word “seduce” when it probably occurred to him that it was a spoiler. Ha!
When Lola wanted to bring a carrot up to Peter’s bunny, I was thinking that she and Peter were probably the same age. She was the only other young person there, and it seemed to me that she was flirting with him. But Peter wasn’t at all interested in the pretty young girl who had barged into his room with a carrot even after he had told her to go away. His reaction (or non-reaction) to her was the same way Phil reacted to the prostitutes at the saloon earlier in the movie. While they were being seductive to get him interested, he turned away from them. Even after being traumatized by the dissected bunny, Lola continued to playfully tease Peter while he and Rose played tennis. Again, Peter was annoyed by her instead of teasing back. So I thought that Lola’s purpose in the movie was to show us that 1)Peter probably wasn’t interested in girls, and 2)Peter was a lot more like Phil than we first thought.
By the way, I love that Peter twirled his tennis racquet like a baton! Ha! That’s something I didn’t even notice the first two times I saw the movie, but it’s just perfect! He couldn’t hit a tennis ball, but he had the dexterity to twirl a baton! I wonder whose idea it was to have Peter do that?

I had another thought about Peter: I think that he was much more skilled in cowboy stuff than he showed to Phil. I think he was only pretending not to know how to do anything to make Phil feel like he was teaching him everything. Otherwise, how could he go off that day on his own, riding his horse through those scary mountains? They had shown him comically falling off his horse in front of Phil and the cowboys, but I think it was all an act.

But did you notice he was wearing gloves when he stroked the rope? And then when he watched George and Rose from his window, and turned away with a little smile, I thought it was chilling.
