I was really put off by a negative review I saw for Licorice Pizza. The reviewer called it “icky” because it’s about a 15-year-old boy pursuing his 25-year-old former babysitter (I think !). He said you can’t even ignore how young the boy is supposed to be because they keep mentioning it. He said the director’s movies are always like a juvenile boy’s fantasy. Even without seeing the movie, it already bothers me that the clothes and hair are wrong. I was around at that time, and I remember how everyone looked and dressed!

The trailer I saw for it turned me right off. She’s always calling calling him a creep and a yucko and then they’re running towards each other in slo mo and I’m just like wtf? I guess it’s brilliant but it seemed horrible to me. 🤷🏻♀️

Robert Daniels, one of the first critics to start championing TPOTD (and BC) after TIFF and wrote the glowing Polygon review, puts it at number 1: He also ranked Louis Wain at 37; I put his blurb in its respective thread 812filmreviews.com/2022/01/07/top-50-films-of-2021/5/

That’s a great description of the movie! My sister was telling me that she read an article the other day where a film critic talked about the year’s best movies, with TPOTD at #1. My sister said that it was the first time she’d read a movie review that made the movie sound so good that she now wants to see it. I reminded her that it’s on Netflix whenever she feels like watching it. We’ve had Netflix for years, but I’m the only one who watches it.

I really hope those viewers didn’t spend 5 million hours watching and thinking “I don’t get it”. Although I think 4 million of those hours were me. Ha!
I noticed yesterday that Netflix has now included a mention of the Oscar nomination in its description of the movie.
It would probably help, too, if they let viewers know that there won’t be any violence, chases, fights or guns. They could put that up there in the corner of the screen where they have “Brief Sexual content” and “Full Nudity”. At least that way people can stop waiting for the “action” to start and just watch the movie! Of course, that would be a spoiler for people expecting Phil to do something awful to Rose.
