Maybe it’s because now I have watched the film but those two descriptions feel so on point,
I was perplexed by people saying it is slow or that the plot is complex because, the narrative is actually very traditional but yeah, in an old Hollywood style. You immediately can know those people who felt desperate watching it are just not familiar with old stuff.
But yeah, it’s Jane Campion so there is something dark even pervert hidden there and like Scott said, it is far from being conventional.
I like this part about Dunst because it seems she is also describing the chapter about Johnny that it’s not in the film. That’s what Peter saw, the story repeating again and that’s why he had to do something.
I knew we would have had a positive review by A.O. Scott but it’s clear now that he would had also gave it his “critic’s pick” stamp.

Yes! Old Hollywood is right. I even like that he points out their "counterpointed performances" because the 4 actors really do have different styles. It reminds me of Streetcar Named Desire, which paired Viviene Leigh (very classic, performative theatre style) with Marlon Brando (more naturalistic). You see that also with how BC and Plemons contrast, for example, and how it characterizes the different between the brothers. I knew we would have had a positive review by A.O. Scott but it’s clear now that he would had also gave it his “critic’s pick” stamp. Not bad for someone who found BC's nicotine poisoning silly! (On a related note, that writer with a book on method acting even retweeted that tweet praising BC's performance! Lol)
