That was a great long interview! It’s interesting to hear him speaking to someone who talks almost as much as he does. At first, I found the host annoying because he would cut off Benedict mid-sentence, but then I saw that it was just his way of having a conversation with him, rather than a typical interview.
Hearing Benedict talk about the kidnapping incident reminded me, again, of how his story has changed since I first heard heard him tell it. When I first heard it, he said that they had gone off that day to get high, and the kidnappers were looking for drugs. Now he says that they had gone off that day to go scuba diving, and the kidnappers were looking for money. I believe the first version (although maybe they did also scuba dive that day) because it makes more sense to me. And I suspect that his people told him to censor the real story because it was bad for his image.

I found it absolutely adorable that Benedict seemed so sad to hear that Marc Macron agreed with what Peter did. Poor, misunderstood Phil!

I believe the first version (although maybe they did also scuba dive that day) because it makes more sense to me. And I suspect that his people told him to censor the real story because it was bad for his image. I remember all those details from his statements years ago. IIRC he wrote an essay or did a long form interview about it. The scuba diving lessons, the getting high (it was the first time I’d come across the word spliff), the looking for drugs, money, anything, where he sat when the bandits were driving the car off the road, what music was playing and how that and being high enhanced the surreal nature of what was happening. (How to disappear completely by Radiohead) He has been known to edit, change anecdotes, or tell versions that are different than a previous version, or other people’s recollections… Sue Vertue teased about that in some Sherlock commentary, interview, maybe about the red thread on Sherlock’s coat or some other production detail. Usually it’s about trivial stuff or something that can’t be verified unless you were one of the people there. I just figured it was a combination of his overactive imagination, people pleasing, image crafting. 😂. He’s not always a reliable narrator 😄
