Has anyone else seen this series?
It's on its first 8 episode season right now, with new episodes releasing every Friday.
It's a fantasy adventure series with magic, a complex world with deep history and some really interesting characters. If you like that sort of thing, it's worth a watch (note the first episode has some violence and creatures ... it's not all sweetness and light)
Rosamund Pike plays a central character and she and Daniel Henney as her ally are both excellent. There are some wonderful performances throughout, and a few I'm holding judgement on until the series progresses. (They could be being played more as blank slates ATM because they have secrets that haven't come to light yet) It's a diverse cast, with some really compelling new (to me) faces.
It's based on a book series, one with very long installments, so there are plenty of stories to tell beyond the 1-2 seasons already slated.
One thing that makes it different than many fantasy, medieval stories is that though all the cultures featured are not necessarily matriarchal, most of the central power is held by highly skilled and educated women, so women hold a lot of sway in the show's world as a whole.
The basic premise is that time is a wheel/pattern that resets sometimes, and all souls are (hopefully) reincarnated and come back for the next iteration, there is an underlying power (kind of like the Force) which some characters can access, learn to use and others cannot or should not (that way leads to madness) And of course, there is a dark evil one threatening the world, corrupting souls and snuffing out light and life ... so a great battle between good and evil is in the cards. There are many players seeming towards one side or the other, many in between and no one that we know yet fully understands the big picture, even if some think they do.
If you do check it out, you should know within 1-2 episodes whether you'll enjoy it. So far I'm liking it.
