We watched Don't Look Up tonight and I was entertained. I liked it better than Dan (he said he couldn't recommend to others and that he didn't think there was anything in this movie that would threaten TPOTD or BC in any awards).
I liked its sense of humour. And I thought Leo was very good in his role. I'm not a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence but I actually liked her in this role. The person I didn't like at all was Timothy C. Wasn't impressed at all by the role or his performance. Half the time I couldn't understand what he was saying - he mumbled his lines so much! And there was NO chemistry between him and JL.
Also that whole wasted segment of the young singer's concert was BORING. Just a filler for this singer. Terrible!
But the ending was funny to me.
I totally agree that this one can't touch TPOTD in any way but I enjoyed seeing a social satire like this. It's the only kind of comedy I really like nowadays.

I liked Jennifer Lawrence in the movie, too! And HATED the subplot about the pop singer, including her song. I think they should've cast a pop star with proven comedic chops, like Miley Cyrus.

I’m the opposite, I guess! I hate when they write women’s characters as intelligent but also useless, which is what they did with JL’s part. But LDC was this dumpy middle-aged nerd with lots of anxiety issues. I was impressed at first that he was playing an ordinary guy with an ordinary age-appropriate wife and grown children. But then despite how unattractive they made him look, he was still referred to as “sexy”, and had beautiful, glamorous women throwing themselves at him. And he becomes the big hero. I think the pop singer needed to be vain and flighty, so they chose the right girl for the part! This was the first time I’ve seen TC in anything. One review I read said that he was just fantastic in his role, but I didn’t get that. Maybe he’s an acquired taste? The ending was the best part of the movie for me, and I suspect that a lot of people who gave it bad reviews didn’t watch it through the credits.

Fair enough - they really did not give her much to do besides be the punchline for the "we're all going to die" thing. And hahaha, you make a good point with how Leo was supposedly this lame, anxious nerd but they wrote him to be perceived as sexy by everyone. Very telling!
I didn't necessarily think Chalamet was fantastic, he was fine but didn't do much. I'll admit I found him much funnier in The French Dispatch.

I think them writing the LDC character that way (totally nerdy in reality, but perceived as "sexy" - when he could be manipulated by thirsty people) was purposely done to get a satirical point across. And I liked how they presented the JL character - serious and uncompromising, and thus ignored and labeled a "nut job" - because that was also the point the filmmaker was trying to get across.

I haven’t watched Don’t Look Up yet but this polemic is hysterical,
The left wing journalists accusing film critics of “elitism” and of “killing the planet” because they didn’t liked the film are friends of the scriptwriter! Lol Social media is hell!

I just don’t think it was a good movie. I totally get what they were doing, but as many of the negative reviews have pointed out, it was like watching a long SNL skit. It’s been done before and it’s been done better.

But even if it was actually good, there is something wicked in having your influential journalist friends scolding people that didn’t liked your work and accusing them of *check notes* causing global warning with…their reviews! I found very interesting the tweet asking whose fans are those people and then mentioning some huge stars names just to be answered that no, they are “fans” of the journalist and debuting scriptwriter! Contemporary journalism/activism is indeed in a shameful state!
These tweets are hysterical. It seems he is hated by a lot of people. I don’t know him and I certainly don’t hate him. I’m agreed with him that global warming is a big issue but he really seems more a parody in a satirical film than someone who is genuinely worried by those issues. If you doesn’t like his film then you are part of the problem!
Save the earth, watch my (bad reviewed) movie! Lol

It’s funny that so many people are blaming Rotten Tomatoes for the bad reviews - as if Rotten Tomatoes reviews movies.
I don’t know why they’re insisting that the movie is about climate change. From the comments I’ve read, people seem to genuinely like the movie and have interpreted it differently. So what?

That’s the writer of the film so yeah, it’s about global climate change. He just used a comet like a metaphor. And then, accused people who didn’t liked his film of being the ones causing climate change! Lol
