I hope it is OK, but I didn't want to continue making the Morning thread go way off the rails, but wanted some place to discuss some of the other media we chat about and consume. If there is already a thread elsewhere, please let me know. sgev1977, I just finished Snowpiercer. It was a good example of a closed environment dystopian sci-fi movie! Those are always kind of fun. I had a bit of trouble with the shaky camera action scenes. I had a hard time thinking it wasn't Captain America trying to rescue everyone. Poor Chris. I loved loved loved the way music was used - it was like lighthearted fantasy music in a lot of places, kind of like the type you hear when characters explore new fantasy worlds and gaze around in wonderment. But, it was of a dark and dirty environment and as they traveled up the train to a brighter and brighter area, the music changed. Now I have to go rewatch Pandorum, since my brain kept insisting Snowpiercer and Pandorum need to be watched together, haha. Also, what was up with Tilda's teeth? If you have fake teeth anyway, why make them look so terrible? And, what was the point of her taking them out? Gross. Anyway, thanks for the rec. It was a good 2 hours of bloody, filthy sci-fi protagonists making other people bloody and filthy.

It’s obviously a metaphor of social classes struggle and the manipulation of government/high classes to maintain the status quo. Tilda Swinton represented bureaucracy. Not exactly the biggest villain but certainly the most grotesque and unforgettable (I actually work for a government historical archive so, yeah, I’m a bureaucrat, by the way! Lol)
Bong Joon-ho also directed Parasites. I don’t know if you have watched it. It won the Palme d’Or and the Oscar two years ago and was very celebrated. It’s not sci-fiction per se but it’s the same genre influenced kind of movie with a mix of strong social commentary and darkish cruel but cartoonish violence. Other works by him are the monster flicks The Host and Okja. Again all of them with slightly simplistic left-wing messages mixed with genre stuff.

I haven't watched Parasite yet.
Honestly, I fell so far behind in keeping up with visual moving media in the past 3-4 years (ever since I made my craft/office studio away from my TV). I tend to spend most of my time reading books, listening to audiobooks or listening to podcasts (the latter two mean I can craft).
I don't pay attention well at home. I have a hard time just sitting and watching, so I tend to craft, which means I am only half watching.
This is why I try to go see BC stuff in the theater. I will sit still and pay attention there!

One interesting thing about Bong is that he works with different genres.
I love Memories of Murder, a thriller.
He's obviously very interested on social matters, at least in his late movies.
I didn't like Okja, though.

I think Okja is his weakest film. Parasite is definitely the best. I have watched Memories of a Murder but I don’t remember too much! Maybe I should watched it again! All his movies are very enjoyable, tho.
It’s funny because it seemed to me that for a long time Park Chan-wook was the most well known Korean filmmaker that makes that kind of very stylish genre films and it seemed to me that Bong Joon-ho was in his shadow but in retrospective it’s very obvious that it was Bong Joon-ho and not him who achieved the massive success with International audiences. He is much more accessible and well-meaning. After all, there is always a positive liberal message in his films!
I personally think that Park Chan-wook is better but he is totally a sick man! Lol And he admits it! I think the pervert old man in The Handmaiden is a some kind of auto-criticism. I mean he kind of injected a pseudo-feminist message in that movie but at the same time the erotic imaginary around female bodies and their sexuality was filmed in such a way that it wasn’t very different to the porn events organized by the villain!
