Has anyone else seen this?
It’s a new Marvel series on Disney+
I’ve only seen one episode, but it’s got a unique feel and Oscar Isaac is very good in the lead.
I don’t want to say too much, because I think part of the fun will be to watch the character explore his experience and for the audience to have things unfold along side him.
And as a Cumberbatch adjacent comment: the first time we see OI’s character it was like Arthur from Cabin Pressure had come to life and was working as a clerk at the British Museum. There was no Surprising Rice and no one said “Brilliant!” but they could have!
There’s also something very Arthur Shappey about how Episode 1’s plot includes a goldfish and Arthur, I mean Steven’s, awareness that something’s up with his goldfish … despite him being inherently and usually blissfully unaware of everything else around him … as a key element.
I could just hear Arthur’s voice saying “now, wait a minute Skip” at certain points (when I wasn’t hearing Ani Difranco singing about “Little Plastic Castles” being a surprise every time and being reminded of the Finnemore skit about goldfish and Neptune.)
For context, as far as my take on other MCU Disney+ series, I loved Wandavision despite being skeptical at first, thought Loki and FATWS were both okay but could have been much much better, thought What If was interesting as a thought exercise and maybe preamble to the multiverse (though SITSV did it better) and skipped Hawkeye completely because both the character and the lead actor are tiresome and pointless IMHO (contracts aside I will forever argue that the wrong character was sacrificed for the soul stone and if I never again see one of the few Female Avengers akimbo* at the foot of a cliff it will be too soon, 2 was 2 too many).
* oddly, I just realized another Ani DiFranco reference
